The 12th of July is about a bunch of men walking around northern ireland with orange sachets around their necks. Hope it rains!

So that the rain dissolves the powder in the Sachets and the streets flow with orange juice ?

I went to Belfast by accident one 12th of July. It was a great weekend - cheap hotel, bars not packed, nice food. I'd recommend it.

Same as, except myself (wearing a green Connacht rugby jersey, silly me) getting a hiding for being a 'teig' cnut in a hotel bar having a ham sandwich at lunch with my teenage sister. :(

Made me research the whole thing in depth to see why i deserved said treatment. And i came to the conclusion that it is a exclusive celebration of feeling superior over your neighbor and sticking it in their faces that your biggoted leader of yonder years defeated people seeking equal rights.

    my 2c.

Its no different from us down here celebrating St.Patricks great victory over the evil snakes now allowing people to go out in to the fields without having to worry about anti venom. We should have our own lodges who organise marches around the reptile house in Dublin zoo.

Very good Theparish.Indeed, Dublin is a zoo and it certainly has a House filled with reptiles until the holiday season.Could be slithering anywhere now, so watch out folks! No point in grabbing a crosier.Has been rendered impotent despite what the Orang Lodges say ;)

Well why don't you go and celebrate your culture in your own areas then

These marches are just to p1ss other people off, if I was a member of the KKK and I marched through a black area I'd expect to get a reaction. They could also argue this is their culture.

Ugh. This rubbish makes me so glad I don't live in Northern Ireland anymore and so angry with my parents for moving me there when we lived in a perfectly nice, normal environment in England. Rest assured that the average English person thinks the whole thing is pathetic, if they care about it at all. Here in London it's just another day, the significance of yesterday being the 12th didn't even register for me until I saw this thread.

It's not a celebration of culture. It's a pack of louts parading around trying to provoke people.
