Visit the Palace, Charles Bridge, Torture Museum, New Town, Old Square, drink lots of Pilsner Urquel (spelling?), avoid the Irish bars, loal pubs a lot cheaper, catch a marionette (spelling?) show, watch Sparta Prague/Slavia Prague/Bohemiam Prague play, go to the massive nite club.

Go go-karting. It is fairly cheap compared to over here. The place I went to was a bit outside of prague. Hop on the underground, to the last stop, then its about a twenty minute walk or get on the bus. Website has the details

Also you can go bob-sleding too. That is on the same underground line as go karting. Great fun and resonablby priced too.

Bob Sled is great fun, doesnt look too fast in the video but trust me, when your on it, its a different story, theres a brake too so safe for the kids

remembere to brake at the end :)

Also, if your looking for nightclubs, I recommend Roxy. Just be careful of chicks "dancing" with you. My Czech friend also tells me there is a new club opening soon. Suppose to be huge. Maybe look that up

went there about 3 yrs ago. the day trip to the concentration camp is okay, it has one of the creepiest towns i ever saw. the shopping there isnt bad either. there was loads of bars there, we used to go to one of the irish bars but you will find lots of other bars there, found them to be very relaxing. heard you can go to gun clubs and shoot ak47s etc but not sure where exactly, its close to the city though. we got a flexi ticket for the trams, think it was 7euro each

Hey, what's the name of the camp you are talking about? - I can't see it in my travel guide - and how can I get to it?

Any other suggestions for Prague as I'm also heading there myself in a couple of weeks - thanks in advance

watch mission impossible (cant remember 1 or 2) .... which is set in prague and then have a walk across the charles bridge and see if you remember the scenes.

depending on the night (weather etc) - theres usually a fairly romantic scene around 2-3-4am ....with the mist coming up over the charles bridge.

theres the museum of torture - reasonably crap - but can pass 30-40mins.......theres a church somewhere which is made from human bones (I didnt find it - think its outside the city)

Oh.... when you get off the plane - DONT take one of the black taxi's outside, you'll be ripped off. (think thats even in the guidebook)

I think they might be talking about Terezin Concentration Camp. It's near a town that IS really creepy, I'm glad someone else thought so too! We got there by bus, it was about 10 years ago though so I don't remember prices or times or anything!

We enjoyed the opera when we where there and thought the Child of Prague was interesting.

To give some background I have lived in the Czech republic for almost a year, though not in Prague but a smaller city.

Prague is very much a touristy city, and as with any tourist destination there are things to look out for.

First off I would highly recommend not buying anything in Prague Airport. Believe it or not it is more expensive than Dublin Airport. For example on a 4-hour lay over just before Christmas I got charged 150 crowns for a pint. That is 6 euros! Compared to my local where pint is 22 crowns or about 80 cent, though it will be difficult to get that cheap in Prague, however 60 crowns is the maximum you should spend for a pint.

Crime in the Czech Republic is relatively low, due in part to the very visible police presence on the streets of Prague. As a result of this visible presence thieves generally use more passive ploys to get things out of you. Pick Pocketing is one common crime, so try to make it difficult for them. Avoid having your wallet on the outside but rather on the inside of your jacket/sweater. This goes for passports aswell.

The transport system in prague is very good so I would strongly suggest you avoid using Taxis and or other private car/bus hire services, as some of them may try to rip you off. As a result of the cost of living being so low in the Czech Republic, you may be ripped off with out knowing it. My fiancee and I spend about 50 euros or 1250 czech crowns or Korunas, on a weekly visit to tesco to buy the ingredients for 5 nights worth of dinner and other household goods. So if you get charged 1000 crowns(40 euro) for a taxi ride, it may seem ok to you, but there is a good chance you have paid for half this guys shopping bill for the week.

Ill ask a few friends and ask if there is anything I have forgotten.

Please do not be put off the city it is a beautiful town and 99% of people are nice and helpful, and I have been there several times and never been a victim of anything what so ever, but it is good to be aware

Hi thinking of going to prague in june for a week, firstly is it too long for prague? also how do the irish fare out thre-are they confused with english?

the gun range referred to earlier looks quite expensive, €60 odd, for 25 rounds?

    thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭syklops

WRT the gun range, 60 euro for 25 rounds sounds like alot. Im not in Prague, but in my local range an instructor, a glock and 50 rounds comes to about thirty euro.

Is a week too long for Prague? Depends what you plan to do. It is a beautiful city and if seeing things is your thing a week is not enough. There are plenty of activities also, just avoid the 'Lads weekend' type activities. They are overly expensive.

As for your question do Irish get confused with brits, I am not sure what your asking. Are you worried about violence?

Was over there 2 weeks ago , its an amazing place , the beer is quality and so cheap about 1e a pint , we did get confused with english at times but its no big deal tbh .

    hi
I'm heading to Prague from a Fri afternoon to Monday afternoon. we've an apartment booked for the weekend in Old Town Square (6 girls).. now my question is to all those who have already posted about heading over earlier this year is roughly how much money would I need for the weekend. we will be doing a bit of site seeing but I'd say the most of my money will be spent on dinner and beer (we'll prob stock up the apartment for breakfast lunch)
Was it as cheap as you expected?
thanks in advance for your replies.

If your accomodation is already paid for, you can have a wonderful time on a very low budget. Beer is very cheap, so if all you do is drink it, your wallet will be quite full at the end of 4 days. To be comfortable, I would say have about 300 euro, but I have spent weekends in prague myself and not spent more than 100. The maximum you should pay for a pint is about 60 crowns, which is about 2.50 in euro, though assuming you dont spend all your time in tourist traps, 30 crowns would be more reasonable.. Lunch will vary but much more than 150(6 euro) would be considered pricey. And you should have change from 250(10 euro) for Dinner.

To put it like this, if you were to eat out for lunch and dinner everyday, and drink 10 pints per day(alot), you would spend about 400 on beer, 600 on lunch and 1000 on Dinner, which comes to a grand total of 80 euro. When I go away I like to have about 50% more than i think Ill need for emergencies, so adding general travel, sightseeing tours, and souvenirs, you should have change from about 300 euro.

are tourist trap bars and normal bars easily identifiable from one another in prague?? or is it a case that all bars in the city centre are more expensive??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭syklops

Most places have the menu up outside before you go in so you can see what they are charging. The only places where drinks are through the roof generally speaking are strip clubs and Prague airport, and I am assuming 6 girls wont be attending any strip clubs.

Thanks a million syklops your post is really helpful.
That's what I was budgeting for but want to bring too much than too little..
I wouldn't rule the strip clubs out yet were a very incusitive bunch and may go for a look see :)
Usually our touristy/cultural bit of seeing a city is the open top tour bus but that's not a runner for Prague. We'll probably go see a few things but the theme of the weekend is to chill.

I should point out that yes most bars in the city centre are more expensive, but not rip-off republic expensive. In a regular pub your talking about 30 crowns(E1.20), in a city centre bar about 40-50(E1.60-2 euro), and the tourist trap, 60-70(2.40-2.80).

I should also point out that these prices are based on 500ml draught beer. There are hundreds of cafe bars in and around the city centre which happily charge 70 crowns for a 330ml Bottle of Lager. If your on a relatively tight budget, I would try to avoid these. Most have tables outside with the menu on the table so you can have a quick look before you sit down as to what they have. Beer in Czech is Pivo, and bottled in Czech is lahové. Generally speaking if it says lahové pivo and does not say any other kind of pivo(apart from non alcoholic/nealkoholické, then they will have no draught and might be expecting quite a bit for the bottles.
Thanks a million syklops your post is really helpful.

Ok, if your do plan on visiting a strip club, this is where you are most likely to be fleeced. However, some forward planning, and being a bit careful and you should be grand. In the Czech republic, what they call nite clubs are actually strip clubs, and most strip clubs are also brothels/bordellos. If you want an Irish style nite club, look for a sign for a disco. Prostitution is legal in the Czech republic so it is all above board, and they are often a destination for visiting business men. Some clubs, see opportunity for massive profit from business men's expense accounts and charge whopping amounts for the drinks in the clubs. Some also remove some of the transparency of the transaction. Here is an example:

A friend was telling me he was in a place where he got 5 fake hundred dollar bills to pay for his drinks with. When he ordered a drink, he would slot one of the bills into the waitresses underwear to 'pay' for the drink. That was all fine, bit of a laugh. One of the girls sat beside him and asked if he would buy her a drink, which he did and after a couple of drinks he was out of his fake bills so asked for some more, and they said ok, but you need to pay your bill, and he got a 3000 crown bill(Which is about 120 euro). He paid and then left, very disgruntled.

If you want I can ask him the name of that place and can pm you it. There are some places of course where there is no entrance fee, and no exorbitant prices on drinks, and good service, but you wont find many right in the city centre. I can also ask my friend if he knows of any good ones if you like. Perhaps one with some male strippers? Ill have to tell him the reason I want to know though in case he thinks I need to tell him something. ;)

I would recommend a bus tour, around the city or a walking tour(though not in the current heat) though. As well as being a very attractive city, it has also been the set location for lots and lots of movies, so if you have someone to point out places to you you will start to recognize places. Mission Impossible, Casino Royale, XXX, Bourne Identity, The lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, A Knight's Tale, Van Helsing, Hellboy among many many others all had scenes filmed on location in Prague. I always get a kick out of watching films and going "That's not actually Miami, that's Prague, I have been there!".

Well everyone I'm back and I have decided I will be going to Prague.

I wanted to check to see if this is a fair price. Aerlingus package deal for two people is Flights + Hotel, Taxes and Fees + Breakfast Buffet for 374EUR. When I pay this money will it mean everything is paid for? I have never gotten a package deal I always booked everything separate.

Anyway, I was also wondering about the attractions that are a MUST see when going to Prague. Also will be a birthday when we get over there so if there is anything fun we can do when we get there for that.

    Thanks in advance.

Have you any information at all about Prague?

The basic tourist experience is fairly standard: the Old Town Square; Charles Bridge; the old Synagogue; the castle (not so much the interior); the astronomical clock on the Town Hall (adjacent to the Old Town Square); an interesting miscellany of central European architecture; good Opera House.

It's a while since I was there, so I don't have current advice on eateries.

Concerts are the heavily-promoted. There seem to be a dozen on every evening, usually by troupes of fairly-good good musicians performing popular classics. You don't have to seek them out: fliers will be stuck into your hand wherever you go.

One thing that irked me about Prague is a tendency to rip tourists off. The taxis are notorious, and the advice is to use "AAA Taxis" (Google to see if that is still the current advice). Check every restaurant bill: I found that about half of mine were padded in some way.

There is an amount of sleaze in Prague: it's one of the main centres of the European porn business. It's not in your face, but you should be careful about clubs near Wenceslas Square, as you might not get what you expect.

Try the bob sleigh or go karts for birthday fun. Bob sleigh is on the green line and think you get a bus from there to go karts. Track is meant to be one of the largest and fastest. On the phone now so can't search. I posted all the info in a thread a good while back you could maybe look for.
