I'm looking to book a single fare from Dublin to Sligo next week - the price is coming up as €22 for an adult ticket and €22.50 for a student ticket. So, I'm wondering if this is some sort of error or is it just Iarnród Éireann just taking the piss?

The adult fare is a special online discount, either 10 or 22 euro it would be 32 or 44 euro cash depending on the day of travel

Student fares are fixed and don't change depending on the day/time

Crikey, thanks for that. Can't believe that €22 one-way is a discounted fare, if I'd gotten my act together and booked last week, I could have flown down with Aer Arann for €22!

€10 fares are also availble on some services.

The terms and conditions between tickets are different. While the student ticket is more expensive, it is also more flexible - it isn't tied to a particular service and no supplement is charged if you travel on a different train.
