Yes, I would do so too.

I suggest looking up "Éire Nua"or what I posted in RaN. I think it is the way to go.

Shhhh!Don't let them know we're members of that!:pac:

Perhaps ? Perhaps not ? Were really getting into hypotheticals now though since no Government has ever proposed such a thing and is not likely to in the foreseeable future.

Should each of the counties/regions/provinces of the Republic or the UK mainland be expected to be entirely self financing

Mayo is not trying to secede :D

Which is your answer, yes or no?

Recently, there have been warnings from the NI assembly of severe cutbacks hence my question of such a scenario along with high taxes in order for NI to pay for itself.

Its interesting how Owen will not pay a high price and you are on the fence on such an issue

You are either extremely naive, or are being purposely obtuse. Look at the experience of whites in post apartheid South Africa. To claim that people who have been discriminated against are less likely to discriminate is ludicrous in the extreme.

    @ Gurramok

No I wouldn't, and in Ireland it is misleading to look at the direct levels of taxation as a measure of the tax burden, as they are kept artificially low by the use of so called stealth taxes.

I'd rather my tax Euro be put towards funding hospitals, schools and the like, rather than satisfying the wet dreams of the likes of SF and bringing the Republic into a costly, protracted and almost certainly deadly struggle to maintain power in the six counties.
Thats right, we will arm ourselves and drive them off the land......

If a federal republic is what happens there will be very little opportunity for institutional discrimination. Ulster will have its own parliament.

You seem to have a rather base attitude towards "southerners"

You are aware Edward Carson came from Dublin?

May I congratulate you on your fantastic debating skills. I feel we have all learnt a lot from you.

Why is it, that any debate on Northern Ireland ends in name calling?

No thank you. I don't want to get into bed with the people of NI, and I'm pretty sure that a majority of them would not want me there either.

I don't want to be effectively excluded from Irish state as part of an effort to contrive a nationalist majority in Ulster.

You make a relocation to France seem more and more desirable.

I hope you are not referring to Carson?

EDIT: Your post seems to have mysteriously disappeared.... the one were you revealed your ignorance about who Carson was. Or else this Beta skin is acting up again.

Well actually a UI will only come about when a majority in NI want it, so they will actually "want you there".

What do you mean by "excluded from the Irish state"?

First off, France is a lovely country :D

Secondly you wont be excluded. Are Americans excluded from the American state?

He was arguing that a federal system would result in exclusion. It wont.

Thought I made it clear but here we go again.

If there were a UI/UK referendum tomorrow I would in all likelihood vote for UK

If you could (somehow) convince me that financially I would be marginally be better off in a United Ireland than in the United Kingdom then I probably wouldnt change my mind

If you could (somehow....and this is a real streach) convince me that financially I would be considerabaly be better off in a United Ireland than in the United Kingdom then I probably would have to seriously give some thought to....................Moving to Germany :pac:

Well you have been asked what it is about, and we haven't got a convincing argument yet. What problem are you trying to fix with a united Ireland?

Its not all about money but yes money does play a big part. Its not a shame -merely rational.

The problems that have plagued the north since partition. To have a inclusive country for all, that all can feel a part of.

A typical Dublin 6 attitude? LOL. I don't believe I compared Collins to Bin Laden either? Don't let that stop you frothing at the mouth though. Also, I though personal abuse was a ban worth offence?

I did not ask if you would be better off in a UK or a UI.

I asked are you willing to pay the price to maintain the Union no matter what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,089 ✭✭✭✭P. Breathnach

Well actually a UI will only come about when a majority in NI want it, so they will actually "want you there".

If it is not to come about until a majority in NI want it, I'm quite safe. Because it ain't gonna happen in my lifetime or in the lifetime of anybody already born, or their children or grandchildren.

Right, let's take one of them, possibly the biggest. The distrust between the two communities. Can you explain how a united Ireland will fix that?

The "problem" that there will eventually be a time when nationalists will be in a majority in NI and will want to join the Republic. Why don't you ask them what the problem is?
