Number of blocks per SQ Metre.

    I have a bill of quantities for my new house build. The quantities are set in sq metre but I'm trying to find out how many standard blocks and standard cavity blocks are in a square metre?

    What I'm trying to do is calculate the cost per block of supply and the cost per block for laying for both cavity blocks and standard solid block.

    A block on edge, including 10mm render on 2 sides has an area of 450mm x 225mm = 0.10125 m2

    1/0.10125 = 9.88 blocks/m2. You can round it up to 10 for simplicity.

    A cavity block has the same dimensions in elevation

    Dont forget, to get a more accurate quanity, and not over order, to calculate the opes (doors/windows) and subtract this from the overall elevational meterage as described;) Or is this off topic????

    no, not off topic rayjdav....


    ive always simply rounded it to 20 per sq m for a double leaf, 10 for a single leaf. you can choose to calculate through simple opes as well, in most cases it would pretty mush counterbalance wastage and cutting.

    i would certainly subtract major openings ie garage doors, large glazed areas etc... but for standard doors and windows id just measure through.

    Remember 4 inch blocks on the flat have around 20 per m2 too. If using hollowcore floors you might have some on the flat.

    I did up the window schedule first on Excel and when this was done (to get window prices) I just added the total window areas with a single click (ie 1.8x1.4 window, 1.2x1.0, etc), then subtracted this from the gross floor area to find the nett area of external blockwork.

    Actually as I typed Ive just remembered I did this to get the number of wide cavity wall ties needed, and to work out the amount of blocks for blockwork quotes, then I ended up ordering 3 extra bales of blocks and sent them back when I didn't need them!
