Just wondering how often this happens to other people.

Lately its been happening a lot to me.
trying to have the usual laugh or crack a joke with people in shops, barbers etc. and then discovering their english isn't the best so they don't get the slang or joke and then we endure an awkward moment we're we both nod and laugh it off.

Thats probably one of the reasons there isn't as much integration as there might be. Culture clash is just too much effort for some people. I like learning about other peoples ways and things, but both parties have to understand that your looking for common ground. If you give it a go you might learn a lot about them and yourself. It will make things easier next time you meet someone else from their culture.

But to answer your question, I dont try to have the 'craic' with foreigners - the very nature of the 'craic' is Irish so it would be wasted on them.

Thing is though as far as say . . . . Polish people go you can't always tell, so say in a barbers waiting room or whatever you don't know till you start talking to them.

My husband is French-Canadian and he doesn't get our slang at all.
His personal favourite is Ginge and Minge. Ugh..

A Podge and Rodge box set would sort that out in no time.

    ya, nothing too bad.
Generally results in silence when the other person is expecting a response.
