ID requirements to enter Ireland

    I'm going to be travelling to Europe this summer, interrailing. I'm a dual citizen of Ireland and France and I have a French ID card. I know that its sufficient for travelling around Europe, since I'll be in Schengen Zone countries. Ireland isn't.
    Will I need a passport to get back into Ireland, or is a French ID card okay?

    Ireland accepts EU id cards all right.

    Its hard to get exact info/ links to it on the web, but as an anecdote half the Germans on the flights into ireland use id cards and its regarded the same as a passport by the airport police in ireland.

    @munchkin_utd: The airport police have nothing to do with immigration requirements. This is GNIB (Garda National Immigration Bureau) territory.

    To answer the OP's question, as has been stated on different threads a number of times: Within the EU, EU national ID and passport are equivalent. No EU country is allowed to impose additional requirements.
