Skyscrapers.

I kind of like the concept of the skyscraper, like proper big shiny majestic ones, ideally they should have an elevator taking you up to a revolving (optional) sky bar were I can have a drink and look out over the city. It is a nice feeling looking down on all the madness going on down there.

One thing I was thinking about today is the amount of detail / effort that goes in to designing the top of them that very few people will see anyway if they are not in a helicopter or if it is in a film.

(On a side note, spent a day not that high up studying how people walk (looking from above), - hilarious - some people have the weirdest walking styles, some were pretty cool though, like "I wouldn't mind walking like that")

So, would it work in Ireland and would you like it / want one? Would you trust them?

I love them too. Would be great if we had areas of proper high rise development around Dublin, around the docklands and Heuston areas. I do like the apartment block beside Grand Canal Plaza, and the new building going up near Bolands (the black facade one). The example above of that one near the black horse is a bad one alright.

Have to say though, I didnt like Bono's U2 tower, was waaaay too much like the big evil eye from Lord of the Rings.

We should build the worlds tallest building and have a zoo on the top 5 floors.

The Kuala Lumpur ones were actually the ones I first encountered, was absolutely gob-smacked when I was there, then Sydney, then New York and Melbourne.

I attached an example of what it could look like on Aran Islands.

Every time I come back from asia I look at the buildings here, I keep thinking, why did they stop building upwards?, and what a waste of space to have all these tiny buildings spread over so much land.

Completely agree, when you look at how amazing places like New York look I can't understand why Skyscrapers are not more popular

We have a skyline...its just not ruined by skyscrapers. Dublin is an old city and would be ruined by skyscrapers. They should rebuild Liberty Hall cause it looks shoite but I wouldn't have anything bigger that close to the CC.

The fact you can see the top of the Four Courts is great...you build one skyscraper...you build another and another and then all you have is skyscrapers! Fook that! In cities with skyscrapers the sun nevers hits the street. and its awful clostrophobic. I like visiting cities with skyscrapers but I no way want Dublin to be one.

I'd have to take flying lessons if I thought that was going to happen.

No it took it on a recent visit to Dursey Island, they have really expanded, its just that not many people know about it.

I agree with that. I mean it would be nice to have a high-rise CBD and residental area out in the docklands whilst keeping the city centre area traditional and low-rise.

Places like Liberty Hall, Hawkins House and O'Connell House should never have been built for example.

I think if they build a 30/40 storey skyscraper in ireland there should be an off-licence, bookies & chemist at the top to guarantee its success.

Or better still just have the entire building an off licence. Imagine one whole floor dedicated to budget dutch beers. Scummer heaven.

Not to rip into you Nulty but I find this attitude in Ireland prevalent and plain weird!

Have you never been abroad and seen a big city with skyscrapers?, the skyline is anything but ruined in my opinion. There is a place for both.

Take Paris..an old city , but it has its spectacular business district with Skyscrapers.
If you want to see truely huge skyscrapers try Shenzen, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Shanghai or Hong Kong.
The skyscrapers along the rivers in these cities are just spectacular. The docklands in Dublin would be perfect for this.

I just find the urban sprawl of squat dirty little buildings in Dublin/Ireland such a dreary waste of space.

We also have an Island that is slowly filling up with 2 storey houses. My parents live about 20 minutes from Galway city. When I was about 12 my mum said, one day it will be city al the way to our house and past it, and we thought she was mad. Its built up half the way now, and the prospect of hundreds of acres of green turning into concrete is terrifying.

In Dublin, its pretty much all built up from Swords to Sandyford and from Clontarf to leixlip.

I say Feck the skyline, the countryside is more important. In a few years time I want to live in the Emerald Isle, not in one big city which is surrounded by water, and going on holiday to england to see green fields.

rubbish, there are much older and beautiful cities than dublin with skyscrapers take istanbul for one, paris another.

just back from malmo which is a lovely city and they have the majestic turning torso skyscraper on the docks, magnificent addition to the city

a clutch of skyscrapers say 400-600ft near dublin port would add to the city, i would much rather a skyscaper than the many empty or abondoned buildings in dublin city centre

I think this thread deserves a poll.

To answer the question Dublin absolutely deserves skyscrapers, its a global city and a european hub for many important industries. I do agree however that it should be relegated to a specific ara like a CBD and i hope they get the U2 tower going again or at least something to that effect.
