Basically we're all fu*ked if there was an election in the morning.

Labour has become the most popular political party in the country for the first time ever, according to an opinion poll in tomorrow's Irish Times.
The Ipsos MRBI poll for tomorrow's Irish Times also shows a slump in backing for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, and for their leaders.
The poll, taken on Tuesday and yesterday, doesn't fully reflect the impact of the banking reports, but shows a five-point slump in Fianna Fáil support since January, leaving that party on just 17%.

But Fine Gael are down as well, dropping four points to 28%.
That party is up eight points to 32%; the Greens are unchanged at 3%, Sinn Féin gain one to 9%, and Independents are unchanged at 11%.
Eamon Gilmore also has the highest satisfaction rating of 46%, while satisfaction with Brian Cowen is down 8% to 18%, while Enda Kenny drops 7% to 24%.
Satisfaction with the Government is also down since January, by 7% to 12%, while 83% say they're dissatisfied.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen has insisted that the Government will run for its full term despite a new opinion poll showing a dramatic drop in Fianna Fáil support
Speaking tonight on RTE's Prime Time programme, Mr Cowen said he would not walk away from Government and would make what he called the tough decisions on the economy.
He said people would be able to choose a new government once the current one had run its term.

Nice to see FF (The Soldiers of Bankruptcy) taking a pasting in the polls.

    Warms my heart.

I still think they'll do a lot better if there was an election tomorrow.

Hmmmm, I'm concerned about Labour because of trade unions and all that. In fairness, FG should be the next.....
Actually, this just isn't the forum...

no , because he knows that whatever limited credibility this country has in the financial world and it is very limited would be gone if we elect labour . labour = imf in 6 months max

    Because i don't like politicians!!!

But i'd take ff over labour . . .I wouldn't mind labour as the minoroty party in a coalition, but not on their own or as a majority.

That's an assumption on your part. Can you elaborate a bit?

There might not be a country left before the next general.
Personally, I'd like to see Labour, but picking a party is like picking which type of intestinal parasite you'd like.

    FF or The Beards Party.

    God, it's depressing.

Hoping for FG majority, but not expecting such!

So Labour gets into Government... What will they do????

Hate to break it to ya but they won't do much more than any of the rest of them will do.

There is no, NO, political party in the country in a position to take control at the moment. And even if there was a new one created it would still be pissing against the wind cleaning up the previous Governments problems.

In short...you're a favourite runner until you're not actually running.

These polls mean **** all. The next one will be greatly changed also, even if they did a poll every day of the week they would be different. The only poll that matters is the General election.

their is going to be very stringent cuts in public service pay and numbers social welfare rates ,and low paid brought into the tax net , this years 3billion prob just the tip of iceberg , do you think labour have stomach for it ? , nope , their solution will be to tax the people / industry that might create some employment out of the country . this country is is tethering on edge of defaulting inside next year or so , with labour its a certainty

Worryingly though, labour ahve been on the up for a while, and FG have been going down slowly for a while . . .nt that I like FG, they'd be fine if it wasn't for Kenny.

Well Richard Bruton is their nest man but they need to leave him there to look after finance which would be right up his alley.
Thing is, Keny seems to have sorted out FG whcih was in a bit of a mess, and they seem to have great faith in him as an administrator. Which might even make him a good taoiseach.
But it wont satisfy peoples modern 'X Factor' expectations

24% satisfaction for the leader of the main opposition party is ridiculously low, especially when FF are in so much trouble.

Labour are & have been a very decent party.

They were the first party to call for changes to legislation on divorce, contraception, women's reproductive rights and gay rights.

They established the Combat Poverty Agency, introduced the Equality Legislation which for the first time outlawed discrimination against people with disabilities, gays and lesbians, Travellers, ethnic minorities and other minorities.

They introduced the National Anti-Poverty Strategy, now an EU wide policy.

Labour introduced the first legislation to cap spending at elections, control political donations, and require politicians to reveal their interests.

Uniquely among the larger parties, no Labour politician has ever been charged with corruption.

I'd prefer them by far to FF or FG, who are just two sides of the same coin.

That's all dandy. We know from that they know how to spend money and create bureaucracy. Now, how do they intend making us all money, if you're not a Government employee that is.

    Yet.
I'm sure many people entered into politics & into a political party thinking they would change the world with their views.
In my opinion a political party is only as strong as it's followers, which means power.

Well, the last time Labour were in government - albeit a rainbow government - there was economic growth in the country of a level never seen before, not to mention the huge social reform that went in hand with it.

Things are a bit different now. One of the problems with Ireland is the amount of bad unenforced, or unenforceable legislation we already have. The BIG problem we need to address is reforming and fixing the various systems already in place before new bad unenforceable nonsense is spewed out (by anyone).

Oh, and fix the economy, almost missed that one. Something that's not likely to be done by people afraid to give the Beards a bit of stick.
