USB 2.0 slow transfer speed

    Transferring a 6gb file from external hdd to usb memory stick I am only getting 4mb/sec.

    Surely this should be faster with USB 2.0 I thought it would be 20+ mb/sec

    System
    Windows 7
    Dual core AMD Athlon
    both file systems are ntfs.



    Edit: If i transfer the file from the external (usb) hard drive to my C: drive I am getting 28mb/sec.

    Why not to the usb memory stick??

    It depends on the USB stick. There was one on sale in Tesco recently that had write speeds of about 10mb/secs. I've had one that would only hit 3-4 mbs/sec, it's a ball ache to transfer anything big.

    Most garden variety usb memory sticks can't write at anything like the speed of a hard drive. 4 MB /sec isn't unusual.

    write speed is always slower than read speed. the 28MB/sec is the read speed (it's going from the hard drive.) 4MB/sec is about right for the write speed (onto the usb stick).

    Hi Chief,

    this is a known issue in windows 7, i had it myself, specifically with an nVidia chipset which is what i reckon you have, along with 4GB ram. i had to switch from windows 7 x64 to windows 7 x32 because the drivers even ethernet drivers are more stable on win7 x32, my fingerprint reader (connected via USB bus) no longer goes ga-ga, also gone are the choppy bluetooth connections i was getting on x64 (bluetooth on usb bus again)...

    In this case its nothing to do with Windows 7.

    The OP is getting about 17MB/s read, 4MB/s write. That's perfectly normal for a basic thumbstick.

    You can get faster but you'll pay for it, Corsair Flash Voyager GTR for example.

    i've win7 x64 and i've no problem with read/write speeds. i'm getting about 28MB/s read and 7MB/s write. if you want to speed up copying, use TeraCopy. it queues the copying, rather than do it all together. really handy app.

    Can I take a guess, those figures look like classic 'New Sandisk' budget USB thumb drives.
