Perhaps what you could say is the term "unlimited" in broadband terms is abused - both by the isp and the downloader.

The term "unlimited" has been abused alright, however if you take some of the limits of the likes of Smart, UPC and others, who specify fair use policy in their t&c, then the limit is around 150 GB, which is sensible enough.

Setting the limit at 30 GB is a joke. That's an entirely different discussion though. The issue at hand is more the service delivery and the quality. The cap only becomes a problem, once you can use the service.

Taken from the FAQ on the imagine website:

    Q. Are there any download and upload limits associated with WiMax Broadband?

    A. No, you can pretty much download as much as you want, when you want. However, there is an Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP) to ensure a level playing field is maintained so that all WiMax customers receive the same great service."

So - it is clear that they do have a fair usage cap ...

Is 30Gb unreasonable to most users? I think not.

If you want more - you will pay for it.

I look at it the same as pizza hut. Try going there and partaking in the "Eat all you can" buffet any lunchtime. I've often come away with one slice of pizza and a spoonful of some awful salad mixture.

Its the greedy people that f*** it up for everyone else.

30Gb to you is unreasonable. 300Gb is unreasonable to someone else. Hell, even 300Tb would be unreasonable to someone out there.

    Unlimited ... within reason.

People feel claustrophobic when it comes to "caps" - and even if they never went anywhere near their cap limit - they still feel hard done by if their downloads are capped.

Got a phone call from what seemed to be a little girl asking me to change to Wimax

Told her that Im happy and didnt need to change, told here about the reviews and she asked was it from the "smeer" campaign on boards.ie.

She said her Dad play 360 and PS3 and "its fine for him"
(Great then sign me up love.....)

Anyway she start getting angry and here tone changed
"do you not trust Google and Intel" she roared......

At which point I told her Im not getting into who I trust and if I want it Ill call them ...

They really should dish some proper training out.....but first I recon they should sort Wimax ......

Why are you an apologist for Imagine?

    That T&C / FAQ is a disgrace.

Unlimited is Unlimited Not 30G, or 120G

30G byte is a reasonable Cap. I don't argue it should be higher. Probably should be 15G or 20G for their network.

It is a totally unacceptable that YEARS after ASAI and Comreg claiming they would stop "hidden Caps" and misleading Advertising of Unlimited and "up to" speeds that it continues.

It's appalling that ANYONE on boards using Internet would attempt to justify such double speak.

    10G is a low cap
30G is a Moderate Cap and Digiweb are up front and honest about it
120G is typical large Cap (UPC)
200G is a premium package cap.

Only 0.25 Mbps 24hrs a day for a month is over 300 Gbyte.

If the typical amount of TV watched, was watched as BBC iPlayer, RTE player and YouTube that would be 160Gbyte a month.

30Gbyte is perfectly generous as a cap on a Nomadic Wireless product like Imagine's. It's probably too generous. But it's worse than Lewis Carolls' Humpty Dumpty to claim it's unlimited.

The fact is they're all legitimate users having horrible experiences. They moderate all of their comments on Facebook / YouTube now but when they first created such portals they were moderation free... and full of complaints.

cant argue with the masses - it seems there sia large amount of customers getting a substandard service as reflected here and on all the social media....its only a matter of time it gets into the press which will be only be a good thing

Imagine needs to get its ass in gear with the rest of the ISP's in this country. Still thats another matter and one which will produce yet more hassle :D

This thread is to do with .... wait for it: WIMAX ...

the ONLY routers working with wimax service are those provided by imagine themselves.

Imagine provide wireless ROUTERS for networking on their network. They are crap and require restarting every few days like all crap routers which end up with memory problems. It isn't an Imagine specific complaint, all free wireless routers from ISP's are crap. I swapped this for my own and set it up to work same as their router does.

Whether I use their provided one or my own is irrelevant, the result is the same which I tried to explain to their support but they keep telling me, its my router even though there's has the same result.

At random times Steam connection is just lost, looks like the required ports get blocked as I can't even view my friends list. It happens at around 9:30 and sometimes at 12:30 in the morning which makes me think it is unlikely to be a contention issue and more likely to be something weird going on with their traffic shaping software.
So ... you are talking about a totally different service.

No I'm not, I know what service I'm receiving, its a fixed WiMAX solution from Imagine. Why do you think you know better than me what service I'm receiving?
My experience with Imagine is not wimax based - it is dsl based - and I NEVER once had any problems, even using torrents.

If you aren't using their WiMAX service, why are you telling me its perfect when I am using it and having problems. Why are you even posting on this thread claiming to have friends that use it trouble free? You must know them quite well to be getting detailed feedback about their WiMAX experiences.

DSL isn't WiMAX, they are different networks entirely so it is entirely possible that you download torrents trouble free on your DSL connection but that they are blocked on WiMAX and they are blocked on WiMAX from Imagine.
I'd take their support suggestion of changing the router very seriously. Obviously, your insistence that it worked perfectly with two other providers and not bothering to check to see if your router has problem is making any analysis of your Imagine experience less plausible.

Yawns, shouldn't you be getting back to work for Imagine already or are they paying you to post on boards all day. I'd rather they fixed the service TBH.
I changed from the netopia to a belkin router for the dsl, and found absolutely no issues at all. When using the eircon provided netopia, I would have had problems, especially with bittorrent.

Why do you think I or anybody else on a thread about WiMAX cares about torrents over a phone line?
So, less of the negativity, especially when you refuse to even bother checking to see if your router is the root cause of your problems. And before you comment, do check to see that you are commenting about the right service in the first place!!!

I did, their routers crap and has the same problems. I wager, its posted earlier in this thread in fact. Maybe you should try reading it before posting in it talking about how anyone bad mouthing Imagine are liars and everyone you know says it works wonderful. If it does thats great for them but it isn't for me and many users on here and you posting telling them to shutup and stop bad mouthing Imagine is A annoying as you clearly work for them and B frustrating as I want it to work and would rather Imagine listened to the feedback and fixed the issues rather than hiring some fool to come on here and try to lie to people.

I am commenting on the right service, you don't know what way is up or down.

    edit----

Cool steams blocked at the moment again. Can't connect to steam cloud or view my friends list. Since it worked last night, its hardly a router configuration issue

Well, it seems you are the one who doesnt know what way is up or down buddy - seeing as you said:
"I've reported the problems to Imagine but gave up once they kept telling me it was my router and not their service (as it is obviously their service and I know it isn't my router as it works most of the time and craps out every now and again and this router has been working fine for 3 years with two other providers) and I can only assume others are giving up on getting proper support resolution too."

You CLEARLY state that you are using a router which you have had for the past 3 years, and with two other providers, yes?

    Which providers, and what service?

You cannot simply "swap" Imagine's motorola router for your own. The hub is a single unit piece with wireless router included on the wimax receiver.

Now, you are telling huge porkies buddy. Give it up before you end up like pinocchio

I'll keep going back to the example of the "all you can eat" buffet. If the greedy few were to scoff everything and the majority got little or nothing ... then it wouldnt be fair would it?

Unlimited - within reason - is there in Imagine. They do state in the FAQ's about acceptable usage. They dont hide the fact. Although there is nothing suggesting a 30Gb cap ... perhaps that point does need to be clarified. On that point - I was with eircon for a few years before moving to UPC, and I strayed over the allowed cap - but by a very small amount and not very often. I wasnt charged anything extra for most of the months where i exceeded the cap, but the one month that I went well over the limit, I was charged. Like they said in the terms ... they had a right to charge. Doesnt mean they always did.

These people with their 30Gb .... is it on a frequent basis, and by how much are they going over that "cap" as you put it?

then stop advertizing it as unlimited! :p

Say - WiMax - up to 7mb with lateny of 100ms average and a cap of 30gb. whats wrong with that?

adverts are manipulations so i dont see that as fully transparent - still - thats my opinion

NOTE: you have a right to your opions but still the manner in which you have stated that this thread is a slander of Imagine and also slating opposite opinions reflects very poorly and as a rusult of this you have pretty much turned this thread into a argumentative tit for tat which may have being initiatly productuve but now more or less become distructive to the quality of the opinions being expressed here.

I am using my own router. You know a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not swapped the Motorola router, how could I, its attached to my roof FFS. I have clearly said, I have swapped their wireless router out for my own. They just run the wireless router in bridge configuration which I have setup mine to do. All my machines still get their IP addresses from the Motorola device but I'm using my own router to provide wireless access throughout my house as the Motorola device does not provide wireless access to the devices directly.

I'm not getting into the setup with you, its my home network, you don't know what your talking about and you clearly work for the company who have no interest in solving their networks issues and neither have you so no point in talking to you.

The result of using their wireless router or my own is the same. Dropped packets, ping spikes and random loss of service. It isn't the wireless router or even the Motorola device I imagine, its the traffic shaping technology they use or contention which is causing all the problems which is why talking to support is pointless when all they do is say its my routers fault. Given the problem started using their network setup as installed by their engineer this is not the issue. I'm being lied to by suport sp they can close their support calls.

Given you work for them I don't expect you to acknowledge the issue is not on my setup anymore than the support team does

30GB is not a Fair Usage Policy it is instead a fixed cap, as such it is not unlimited
You can try justify it all you want but 30GB isn't very much, your "defense" is only further hurting Imagine's image on this forum.

Just to clarify, can you confirm that you do not in anyway work for Imagine or any of its resellers? Your welcome to PM me with the answer,

I'd remind you that should you state that you are not and I find you are you will be perma banned from this forum.

Once again I have to raise the point that download caps only come into play if you can donwload!!!!

I remember hearing before about UPC's terrible customer service but these guys take the bisuit altogether. Constantly ignore mails etc. They told me before that they had lost mails from their email server or may I didn't send them!!!!

In my experience since UPC have taken over they've improved their customer support experience tenfold.

I had a few issues with my broadband / digital tv recently and had the issues sorted out asap after a few call outs. Calls are answered within the first minute or two for me whereas previously I could have been over an hour on hold.

None of this sending you around in circles in the call queues anymore.

Alot of Irish companies need to realise that when they start offering woeful customer service that no matter how bad / good their service is people will cancel their direct debits and saunter to the competition.

These are you customers you have to go above and beyond or you don't make any money.

I got a call from them yesterday. Had enquired about when their services would be available at my address. In fairness they gave me an approx date. Delighted now. Between the next 3 to 6 months. Of course I'll take this with a pinch of salt.

I agree with you about UPC. I got fed up of paying huge amounts of money to Sly for relatively poor service. I was a little reluctant moving to UPC because I had a bad experience with chorus before. Im glad I didnt listen to the nay-sayers and instead went for UPC. They're brilliant, and their CS is excellent. Im moving the home phone to them pretty soon. I've weighed up all options and think the 18 euro for calls to 21 countries being free is excellent.

Cue the barrage of dim and half wits to suggest that I work with UPC.

WiMax, as far as I am aware after called Imagine support, will not be available until sometime in July or August. At that stage, I will more than likely go with it, yes. I have no problem in going for a product which I know works for anyone of the people I have spoken directly to. Should I doubt them? I dont think so.

And no, I dont work for Imagine. :)

No need to - boards is about discussing the point - if someone calls you a douche then you just go on and discuss the topic and let your argument be the standing point in the discussion - not the amount of insults you can get into one post without getting banned

thats my opinion on the matter.

As for me - ill be interested to see if wimax does come to my area since there is only three ireland out here where i am..altho i will say three have gotten thier arse in gear a bit

If i could just get an improvement on the latency i would be happy with it. *In my dreams* :D
