"I only smoke when I drink"

WTF is that about? Why do some people only smoke when they drink? Why even bother - drinking alcohol might make you enjoy your night more but smoking won't! These people will eventually become addicted to cigarettes.

Do people do this to 'fit in', or is it because a lot of their friends spend time in the smoking areas and they feel left out. I hear people saying all sorts of things like 'Smoking is actually really nice, but only when you're drunk', 'It makes you drunk quicker', or 'You get a great buzz off smoking when you drink' but it sounds like bull to me - I think they're doing it because they feel left out and they are trying to fit in.

What are your thoughts?

The smoking areas are where all the kool kidz hang out. All the boring plebs stay inside to guard the seats & coats, etc.

i started off smoking by being one of those who only smoked when i drank..i dunno its wierd its like you really crave a fag when you have had a few beers, its a pretty common phenomenom.

I only smoke when I drink. Simply beacause I enjoy having a few cigarettes when I'm drinking and it's the only time i get a craving for them.

The smoking area is quite appealing when you're in a club. You can have a conversation without shouting at the top of your lungs. Personally, it stops me drinking more cos I will be out in the smoking area. Anyway, each to there own.

Not necessarily, i've been doing it for years having maybe one/two cigs when i'm out drinking and i've never felt the need or craving for one the next day.

It just comes down to being more social and of course smirting:P

For some reason, I'm picturing those social studies handouts we had in school in the 80s. The Peer Pressure bit usually had clip art depicting delinquent youths smoking on "street corners" that would try get to "fit in" by 'taking a drag'.

I used to do this. Drinking tended to switch off the reasoning part of my brain that stopped me doing stupidly pointless things.

I don't do it any more.

sorry but most of that is crap. I smoke when I drink (well not if only having one or two) - the reasons are simple, I am an ex 20 a day smoker and I have found the will power from somewhere not to smoke during the day and can sometimes go 3 or 4 week without one.. as for fitting in, well id much prefer to avoid smoking while drinking but I havnt found the willpower for that yet..

This isn't 1992, people don't smoke to fit in anymore.. It's the smoking ban, it made smoking areas too much craic.

I'd be too cheap to smoke regularly so when I'm out for a pint it's much easier to bum a smoke when someone goes out for one.

Too lazy to smoke when I'm not drinking.
