When I got mine in, i was fetting 8 meg for about 8 hours, then it drop like a brick to 1mb.

    SCAM!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 299 ✭✭Salvation

Also just to let you all know the "Cooling off period" starts when you sign up and not when you get installation.

If you have it cancel your direct debit immediately so they cannot withdraw money and if they want to bring you to court by all means as it will expose what a scam this is.

Even mobile broadband is quicker I can get 1.9 MB down on a Voda 3G modem here .

on my dsl broadband I am lucky i did'nt disconnect.

Today services = Nil zero connectivity even after router restarts etc

Support = No "tech" support on weekends

Phone Service = when I lift the phone for a dial tone I get massive amount of static.

The engineers installed crap yesterday, the outside canopy is below the level of the other house, now there is a big long pole you think they would put it near enough to the top to get a clear LOS.

I am sorry I got this as it is pure and utter ****e, anyone thinking of it dont.

I live exactly 1.5km from the high site and when it rains as it did last night completely gone .

Anyone here from Dundalk with Wimax ?

I got a call from them at lunch time to say there was a problem with their transciever.

    I've Wimax in Dundalk,

I'm getting the same speeds as you at present. Sometimes drops a bit but otherwise brilliant. Too good if anything as I'm on 3mb but getting higher at 6-7. Out of cooling off tomorrow so we'll see.
I've had no phonecall and no outage yesterday lunchtime or since I signed up.

I'm cancelling aswell. I have the payment coming off my laser card. Went to the bank before and they told me that I had to get Imagine themselves to cancel the payment. It really is a frustrating service. Great at 3 in the morning but brutal from 4 to 12 in the evening.

I find that incredible in this day of age where a bank will not let you stop someone from taking your money!!! Its mad..:)

They do for some ISP's. I think they have to have a certain number of customers that have had to come to them to cancel the direct debit before they allow customers to do so.

For example, ICE Broadband customers were allowed cancel direct debits in banks because the company kept billing people who canceled the service and the service never really lived up to many people standards so the company got a bad reputation with the bank.

I think they don't like to do so on the assumption that the business is having trouble with a few customers at first.

As Imagine usually resell eircoms service (as is my understanding) and most of the rest of their net work was previously IBB, they would have had relatively happy customers.

This is the first time they have really had to setup a network on their own rather than maintain one and it would appear they lack the expertise to work out the issues/provide enough bandwidth to meet demand at peak times. I would put it down to business people within the company seeing mobile companies getting away with the upto racket and joining in as it appears to be a license to provide no service at the moment due to extremely poor regulation by both Comreg and the the Advertising Authorities who let them away with claiming up to speeds because of unknown contention on their masts meaning users might get those speeds theoretically in optimal conditions if nobody else is on that sector of the mast/sharing backhaul with them from that mast

Seems unlikely that this would occur particularly in any kind of built up area and with the prices these companies charge being about half that of eircom, they know they will be over-subscribed shortly. Its a short term business plan in the end as Ireland is so small, you just ruin your companies name as Imagine are currently doing in this case.

I have to say the contention doesn't seem to be that bad for me most of the time I can get at least 200KB/s but of course it is supposed to be 7Mbps so that is well under what I should be getting but I only really want it for the odd download, playing online games and email/banking/boards etc... so no real loss if I can't do all of the above at a certain moment in time. I can do most of it at work.

However Steam connection throwss a fit every now and again on Imagine so as soon as NTL or better alternative comes along, I will move from them as the service is only just about good enough for me because I don't want to pay line rental to eircom/have anything to do with eircom and Digiweb caps are too stingy for the price even though I don't really download that much.

Thats a mad lie he is telling you.

For one they sell mobile as well as fixed WiMAX modems so they can't tell you what contention they have.

Secondly, I am on 7Mbps in an area with plenty of broadband choice and speeds drop to 200KBps or 0.2Mbps at peak times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

the modems may be "physically" fixed, but it's a Mobile WiMax service, Not a fixed WiMax service.

A true fixed Wimax service is about x16 better performance.

Another thing I noticed was that their minimum termination perod is the length of the contract. 12 months. I know with a lot of other companies when they state minimum termination period this usually lasts for the 6 months and then you can cancel without penalty. Imagine don't see themselves as a long term player in the market and are just out to make a quick buck or two. They are not doing this by the price they are charging monthly but by the huge installation fees and the cancelation penalties.

    STAW AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's the cancellation penalty? I've been busy in work so haven't had a chance to cancel yet. The service has been particularly awful in the last week though. Barely usable from 8-10pm the last two nights

It's 100. Irish law really is a joke. They can give you whatever service they want and charge you whatever they want. They could sell you 24mbps and only give you 1mbps and charge you the same.

    Blame Comreg.

Imagine Wimax sucks bigtime. AVOID this product at all costs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,890 ✭✭✭cgarvey

    It's 100.

Aside from your rights under consumer law, of course. If they're not delivering a usable broadband service (even if it is a contended service), then they cannot charge this to terminate the contract (that they've effectively made null & void by not delivering the service). It gets vague (especially with a contended service), but if it's dialup speeds (or worse!) every night, then that's not broadband by my definition of reasonable. Argue your case, and go to the small claims court if needs be.

Theres no point. Imagine like every other Irish ISP are allowed to offer an "up to" package. Up to 7mb. They should be made throw in the an "at least" 4mb at peak times.

Its never been challenged in court though as ISP's always let people off the additional fees before it goes to court.

They often threaten to take people to court but unless you owe them hundreds they won't go through with calling in their lawyers for a small claims court appearance.

My logic would be that the reason they never let it go to court is because they know no court would uphold their contract as legal as it pretty much states Imagine don't have to provide a service and you still have to pay them which is of course nonsense.

I don't think I've ever seen someone go up against an ISP on these boards and not come away with getting out of the contract free of charge.

The ISP's keep the clause to catch people willing to give them free money out of fear IMO.

Of course that would be useless to you if you went to court but I'd push them hard on it with repeated phone calls before I'd give in and pay an unfair cancellation charge when a service isn't fit for purpose.

In other news, don't believe the coverage map either. Okay, it's excessively simplistic in that it's on a county-by-county basis, but it says Galway county is covered, and the truth is that the first place to get it will be Tuam in July and Galway city centre in September (Why later than Tuam???). Grr.

Am looking for a viable alternative to my 3 mobile dongle; it's driving me nuts, and I'm living in rented accommodation and can't go installing stuff on the house.

    Gadget.

If you want broadband you Need INSTALLED Fixed Wireless (Not Imagine WiMax), DSL on Phone line, UPC on Cable or Fibre. It's not possible on a Mobile Phone Network. Imagine's WiMax is a Mobile Data network but on a worse frequency than 3G/HSPA Mobile. So it's OK to terrible depending on your location and number of other users on mast.

Tell me about it - look at this for a show of how committed the government is to broadband:

There is a point, actually. They're advertising, and selling, a broadband product, even if contended. If the user can never reasonably receive anything approaching broadband (by anyone's definition), then consumer law ("up to" or no "up to) is on their side. It's all down to what is reasonable (or what the courts decide is reasonable).

In my opinion, it's not reasonable to never experience speeds better than a technology 2 generations ago could offer (i.e. sub dialup speeds). I know of 2 Imagine WiMax customers who have terminated (outside the cooling off period) without penalty for this reason. I've not heard of a case in the small claims court, but there's plenty of sample cases in the UK.

Has anyone got the password to the Motorola Wimax CPE MOTO Wi4 External modem ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 DublineqPL

    Hi all,
All I can do is to agree with most of yous that wimax is a crap service.
I am 1 month after cancellation and the modem still sits on my window.

After first month they have blocked my modem over the weekend. I've rang them up what the hell is going on and the answer was I have exceeded usage limit policy! I had big argue with them as they supposed to ring me beforehand and let me know that I have exceeded traffic and I should slow down. but instead, they have just blocked me. Of course, I didn't get proper answer as how big is the limit.... After making few more calls I found out from tech support that you shouldn't download more that 30-40gb per month which is a joke! After 1.5 month I have lost totally signal in my modem and didn't have internet for entire week. I've been on to them every single day and all I've heard was: we will send engineer down asap. After a week I gave up and told them I am cancelling as the speed are crap, pages not being open, there is a limit of 30gb per month and basically I don't have a broadband. They have cancelled it but the modem still sits on my window... I have rang them up 2 weeks ago and they say engineers are very busy but will be in touch with me. And the money have been debited for last month.
And now you are saying there is not possible to cancel direct debit in the bank...

I am sorry to say that but Ireland has very poor internet services...

You can cancel any direct debit whoever gave you the information is wrong.

Walk into you bank with a written letter cancelling the DD and get it done on the spot.

ALL DIRECT DEBITS CAN BE CANCELLED IT IS YOUR ACCOUNT

If they say otherwise ask for the manager and for the written policy of where it is.

I have done it many times with many companies including ISP's
