Bullfighting - Yea or Nay?

Bullfighting is a traditional spectacle of Spain, Portugal, some cities in southern France and in several Latin American countries, in which one or more bulls are ritually killed in a bullring as a public spectacle, except in Portugal where it is illegal to kill a bull in the arena.

Bullfighting has generated controversy in many parts of the world, including Spain, Portugal, Peru, Mexico, and Ecuador. Supporters of bullfighting argue that it is a culturally important tradition, while animal rights advocates hold that it is a blood sport resulting in the suffering of bulls and horses.

No I think it's sick to just kill an animal like that.

I think you're confusing bull running with bull fighting.

Aw I might well be. Do they kill the bulls in bull running too?

No. Not unless they fall & injure themselves badly.

Hmm I thought I saw a thing where they ran them through the streets and killed it. Might have been a minority.

They are usually killed later in the evening, but during a bullfight.

The bulls run through the streets to the stadium...where they are killed. (Edit: gah, too slow)

I wouldn't want to watch a bullfight, and it seems kind of sadistic. But until they go into the ring, those bulls are better taken care of than most cows that are raised for consumption.

It's a stupid saying on boards for 'don't care'

I eat meat, wear leather (shoes, pants occasionally, obv) and get hungry if I see a cow but I still just find bullfighting unnecessarily cruel and barbaric. I do acknowledge that the matadors are extremely skilled performers but the fact the death is so dragged out and gruesome just unsettles me. It just appears a little primitive and muslimy for my tastes

ps. My parents went to a bullfighting event on their honeymoon and left during it as they just couldn't stomach the spectacle

They also have the chance of being granted a pardon (indulto). The slaughterhouse never grants an animal the indulto. Its life is never pardoned for extreme bravery. It’s a small point, but an important one.

Only because if they did, they wouldn't be as tasty. If it was shown that bulls from a run or a fight were tastier, you'd see it becoming a much more regular thing.

They'd have too much muscle, less fat = less flavour

Anything that makes steak even more enjoyable is probably worth it.

Oh, I know the reasons behind it. My point is that the reason we slaughter animals for human consumption in the way we do has as much to do with the way it effects the taste/texture of the meat as it does being humane to them.

I'd be up for "Ultimate" Bullfighting but not interested in it's current format

Just seems giving Juan Sheet a sword makes it not much of a sport! Why not a riot shield?

I think that's what makes the debate contentious: the matadors and aficionados have great respect for the bulls. Great bulls are remembered the way great matadors are. But it's still a pretty one-sided affair, and it's hard to dress up what is basically ritualized slaughter.

Ya I meant it tongue-in-cheek but it doesn't seem like this kind of spectacle that would exist in 2010 in Western Europe, that kind of barbarism as entertainment it's something you'd expect in Saudi Arabia tbh (chop chop square in Riyadh)
