Are you from the USA by any chance? Most Irish people do not go to a pediatrician unless their child has had issues during pregnancy/ birth, or another serious illness. A GP can look after your whole family, give vaccinations, do the well-baby visits to check on development etc.

Nothing beats a good family dr how can do it all and look after the family unit esp when coughs colds and flu can spread in the family unit. If you are not happy with your current dr then start asking around, if you ring you local health clinic they will send you a list of the gps in your area and if you ask the health nurse they may have a recommendation for you.

Paediatricians don't do general checkups and routine vaccinations etc. Usually a GP would look after all the common childhood things, as other posters have said. Try to get recommendations from family, friends and other parents for good GPs in your area. As long as you are not tied down to one GP by a medical card, you are free to change GP. Anyway, there isn't a rush. Most GPs tend to have appointments on the same day you need one and they can refer to a paediatrician if there is a particular problem.

A paediatrician is a specialist dealing with children, in the same way that a dermatologist is a specialist dealing with skin problems, or a cardiologist is a specialist dealing with heart health.

Your GP will deal with routine skin or heart health issues without referring you to a dermatologist or a cardiologist. It's only if the situation is not routine that the GP will refer you on to the specialist. In fact, it's usual that you can't see a specialist without first seeing a GP and being referred by the GP to the specialist.

A paediatrician is a specialist in exactly the same way. The GP will deal with routine issues and in the event of something non-routine, the GP will refer you on to the paediatrician. If all goes well, once you leave hospital after the birth, your child may never see a paediatrician again.

In the US, to which Silja refers, the structure is somewhat different, in that there is direct access to specialists.
