The iPhone generally always keeps a GPRS/EDGE/3G connection open. Do you have a reason to want to disable this; e.g. are you on PAYG and no bundle?

It's apparently the iPhone sending its 3G usage for the day
    but to who????

This happens even with Airplane mode switched on, so it's definitely not the phone sending anything.

It was brought up before on the O2 forums and I think the official word was that some processing occurs on your account at midnight that tots up your data usage. Perhaps one of the O2 reps can clear that up for you.

Yeah I always assumed that the operators billing system breaks the data usage down into 24 hour chunks for billing purposes and certainly not something more sinister like your phone calling home  So relax, it's normal, the phone has to keep an open data connection for push services.
