Why is cannabis still illegal?

    Hi boardies,

So here is the deal. I dont drink, but I do smoke cannabis. For me it's relaxing and a great way to unwind. I work hard, I eat very healty, I work out 3-4 times a week. I went for a check up last week and the doctor told me I was in very good shape and had no underlining symtoms of any harm being done to me.

I supose the reason I a writing this post is that I am sick of the ****ing hipocacy that is in this country. Any time I go out, all I see is fat drunken bafoons. Any time I walk down the street I see some wino falling over the place looking for a change to spend on booze. Everyone I know drinks much more that the recomended amount, and the binge drinking epidemic has got 10x worse in the last few years.

So alcohol is clearly killing this country and it's good people, but some how, I'm the criminal. In order to feed my vise I have to meet up with some doggie person, and then try to eyeball the quality of the product I am getting and get ripped off. If I get caught with the product on me, I am the one who gets in trouble.

I get snide looks from people when I tell them I smoke weed, like they are better than me because they don't, meanwhile they are sitting there with BMI's of about 30 necking down another "pint" like there is nothing wrong with it.

Alcohol is the most dangerous drug of all, its kills 100,000 people a year from poisoning alone, that is excluding all the road accidents and violent incidences.

I'm a good person, am I not entitled to my vise? Why can't Ireland be a little bit progressive and actually abolish this ridiculous law. Millions of studies have shown that regular use of cannabis is harmless, so why is it still ****ing illegal? I understand all the history of how it became illegal, but why is it still illegal. Disregarding all the medical benefits, if its my body, can I not chose what I put in it?

The funniest thing is people all over the world still smoke it, nothing is going to change that. No matter the legal status, it is still smoked the world over in record numbers. Everybody thinks it's a stupid law, so why is it being enforced?

I'm not saying we should ban alcohol, in fact as a sober person I quite enjoy the company of drunk people on a night out, but what I am saying is quite the hypocrisy already. Either ban everything, or ban nothing.

Would love to hear your opinions people, especially ones that say it should remain illegal

I agree with you on all this.
But this thread will go nowhere, just as its 1000's of ancestors have.

Did the doc do a drugs test , I hear ginger biscuits are good for giving a false reading just don't dip them in your tea first.

    Drugs are for losers <

MY BROTHER DIED AFTER OVERDOSING ON MARIJUANA

He was invited by the "cool kids" to hang out at some kids house whose liberal parents had left for the weekend.

My brother, always a moral and thoughtful individual, wanted to attend because it was one of those massive house parties that he'd never been to.

Well, as was later recalled by some of his friends at the party, he was pressured into smoking marijuana. He ended up smoking the entire pack of marijuana cigarettes.

Not long after he went into convulsions and started foaming at the mouth. The people at the party held back calling 9/11 for almost 10 minutes.

When the paramedics finally arrived they could do nothing to save him.

The autopsy revealed he had 3 times the lethal dosage of THC in his blood.

But I'm sure everyone here will deny my story and the fact that my brother died after smoking that illegal narcotic.

In my experience, people who smoke hash on a daily basis, e.g. couple of joints a day, have emotional problems and are self medicating. So you may be physically fit, but how's your head?

/Don't know you, just throwing the question out there

Bill Hicks said it all before but no one will listen. If the government made it legal and started taxing it we'd be out of this recession in no time. That said I don't think we get an awful lot done if we were all going around stoned

    tl;dr

Weed should be legal. End of.

I'd rather see Cocaine be made legal then Cannabis. It's only the morons who snort too much that end up going down that dark road. J/K :D

But seriously, it's more of an exception then the government being hyporcritcal. I'm sure the government are well aware of the dangers of alcohol and such, but if it's just enough to please the majority of people then it's good enough to keep legal.

As for legalising cannabis, well I wouldn't be against it if they decided to make it legal but i'm not too bothered if they keep it illegal.

I really wish I had the energy to debate that with you , but i really can't be bothered ;):pac:

I guess that all comes back to - he could have easily been pressured to indulge heavily in legal substances, like spirits. Alcohol kills far more people than weed ever could...but that's legal.

By the way, based on someones story above above their brother dying from THC - eh, as far as I was aware, there's never been recorded in history as having died from THC. The amount required would be astronomical - as in like, about several grands worth of joints.

    I never said it doesn't. :)

The fact that alcohol is legal is a non-argument when it comes to legalising another narcotic.

Drugs, including weed, hash, affect different people differently.
Hash and weed are known to bring on paranoia in certain people and can lead to mental illness.
Alcohol is more of a depressant and I don't think really affects the mind as much.

If I'm honest about it, I would say that we as people should probably steer clear of all of that kind of thing.
I don't think our bodies are made the consumption of these things.
    Cigarettes etc included.

    ;)
In summary, enormous doses of Delta 9 THC, All THC and concentrated marihuana extract ingested by mouth were unable to produce death or organ pathology in large mammals but did produce fatalities in smaller rodents due to profound central nervous system depression.

The non-fatal consumption of 3000 mg/kg A THC by the dog and monkey would be comparable to a 154-pound human eating approximately 46 pounds (21 kilograms) of 1%-marihuana or 10 pounds of 5% hashish at one time. In addition, 92 mg/kg THC intravenously produced no fatalities in monkeys. These doses would be comparable to a 154-pound human smoking at one time almost three pounds (1.28 kg) of 1%-marihuana or 250,000 times the usual smoked dose and over a million times the minimal effective dose assuming 50% destruction of the THC by smoking.

Thus, evidence from animal studies and human case reports appears to indicate that the ratio of lethal dose to effective dose is quite large. This ratio is much more favorable than that of many other common psychoactive agents including alcohol and barbiturates (Phillips et al. 1971, Brill et al. 1970).

    Why not? It's called precedence

it's probably a tax thing as with poteen but if they legalise it and tax it and regulate it i cant see any problem but hey this is the same government who are banning all the legal headshops and allowing the scum dealers to make a mint off poor quality stuff with all manner of crap mixed with it

No, it's called "two wrongs don't make a right".

Alcohol is very bad for society.
