Small Change

I'm currently living in the Netherlands and one of the many delights is the lack of 1 and 2 cent coins. Prices still incorporate these denominations (1.37 etc) but what you pay is rounded to the nearest 5 cent.

Should this be put into practice in Ireland and elsewhere in the EU? Personally I like it, there's less change rattling around and apparently it saves the mints a good bit of money. On the down side I don't have my massive change jar to smash at the end of the year...

So what's the verdict, should we lose the small change or keep it?

[EDIT: 1 & 2 cents are still legal tender here, so you can still pay with them if you wish. Never seen it happen though.]

Should 1 and 2 cent coins be taken out of circulation? 116 votes

Yes, take the 5 cents as well. (I hate copper!)

This makes no cents! (I don't care)

Sure over here that just means that everything €4.99 for example will be rounded up by €1.01 to €6, ya know, cause it's the logical thing.

Keep 'em. I'm not giving a homeless man an ENTIRE 5c.

    YES, take it.

The coins all look alike, accumulate quickly and weigh a ton. Worthless tat.

Every so often I remove it from my purse and throw it in jars around the house. Sometimes I just throw it on the floor in piles.

    Fcuking shrapnel !!!

I've heard they do that in Finland as well... Anyone know if that's true?

I usually either lose my coppers, or else I occasionally empty them from my purse into charity buckets. Which makes me wonder, would charities lose out?

Keep them. I don't like knowing there's a certain amount of money that you can't ever have because the currency doesn't allow it

Yep, the Finnish do it too and the Belgians are thinking about it last I heard. Germany is against it though. URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_coins#Small-denomination_coins"]More here[/URL

Never mind the 1 and 2 cent coins, it's the similarity between the 10s, 20s and 50s that pisses me off.

Unlike when we had our own currency.

I have a large gallow bottle (weird bottle maybe wine) that I keep lose change in. Two years ago I spent about half an hour sorting through it and the following day I lodged about 3 hundred yo yos in different coinage to the bank! Keep the smaller coins because if they are got rid of with will only allow the ripoff merchants to increase their prices.

Something that is 99c going to €1 is a 1% price increase and over millions of sales that allows some scummer to increase his profits off the back of the consumer.

same here, i chuck all my 50c and under into a big bottle, every now and then i tip it and am always amazed at the amount i get, especially from the 5c 2c and 1c, so keep them i say :)

In Australia, they keep the individual prices marked at 1.26, 2.38 or whatever, and it's when the TOTAL is totted up then the rounding takes place.

AND it's rounded either DOWN or UP - to the closest 5c.

Because of that, everyone wins and loses some bit during the week, so therefore it should roughly balance out.

Yeah I like that about Australia, but what I don't understand is why they don't have all their prices marked to the closest 5c in the first place?:confused: It would make a lot more sense!
