Just like to add. I don't think there's any point getting the 3G version. I've got the wifi one and use it with a mifi dongle and it works perfectly.

I don't regret buying one in the slightless. Any time I'd use my laptop for browsing the web before I just use my iPad now instead. PC/Laptop only gets used for the heavy duty stuff now. I've even started writing up text documents on the ipad instead.

Same here Bulktohulk, MiFi dongle means 2 of us can share a single internet connection/account.

Like you, PC does the heavy lift work, iPad now does pretty much everything else.

For those of you calculating the cost to import remember to include customs duty also. That will be another 13% or thereabouts and is added before VAT is calculated.

    - Anything over €22 you must pay VAT on the full amount
    - Anything over €150 you must pay duty and VAT on the full amount
Plus An Post will charge an extra €6 for collecting the charges!

The above is for getting stuff from outside the EU via the post. If you travel in person the tax free limit is higher as noted in earlier posts.

Right. My cousin posted my ipad from Denver last week so I'm expecting delivery toward the end of this week. I've managed to set up a US iTunes account for ipad apps like abc palyer and hulu. What do I need to do to get these apps working as aren't they locked to us ip addresses? Is it realy complicted? Anyone with any experience of this please post a tutorial or direct me in te right direction! Cheers!!

im expecting mine hopefully late this week as well. Its actually quite simple go to blackvpn.com and choose the US vpn server option and they'll charge you accordingly then they will email you and username and password with instructions on how to set it up on ur mac iphone or ipad. us this code when signing up and it should be 5euro for 3 months code = DKCDUTC. I tried it out on the mac and iphone and it works perfectly a bit slower but enough for the apps and sites you mentioned, well in my case anyway.

I had some speed issues on the iPad VPN, so I changed it to pptp.blackvpn.com and it works flawlessly now.

If anyone's having issues, it might be worth trying it out.

does anyone know if I use black vpn while out on 3g can i incure any charges from o2 or will it just be as normal?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,642 Mod ✭✭✭✭Graham

As normal as long as you're within the limits of your particular broadband subscription.

Just make sure you have a proper broadband subscriptions, whatever you do don't get caught with a pay per MB/kb plan (I'm assuming you're on a 3G iPad).

Parents are in the US and I asked them to pick one up. Just text me saying the guys in the shop asked for my iTunes username and password in order to buy.
Does that sound weird to anyone else or just me?

Odd, I wasn't asked for anything other than credit card. Were they offering to set it up for them?

Could be another way of them restricting ipads for export I suppose.

They sometimes ask that so they can send a receipt to your email address. They did that when I bought my AppleTV in the USA.

They are out of stock. Sent me a mail saying they will send another mail notifying me when it's ready to pick up and there'll be a specialist ready to help set it up. Presumably they can just decline?
The email/username I understand, but asking for the password sounded very odd.

Ahhhh, now you mention that, they did ask for email address for the receipt.

 password, I missed you mentioning that. That would have been a big NO WAY!

I'm having a small bit of trouble with email on iPad.

I can't get it to remember previously used address like the iPhone does. You know the way you start to type an email address and it shows the possible addresses? Like autocomplete.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

    So here's what happened.
They went into an Apple Store and the guy said they were out of stock. Asked if they wanted to reserve it and to give iTunes username and password. The way he worded it my parents took it to mean simply hand them over. So they left.
Went to BestBuy but they were out of stock too. Returned to Apple Store and were seen by a different person. They explained they could reserve one and got them to login to iTunes with my username and password. So the employee didn't see the password. Presumably it is some sort of admin feature in iTunes which sent me a mail confirming my reservation.
Hopefully they're back in stock before my parents are due to come home.

Since I got my 3G iPad, I've sold my MacBook Air. It was simply lying in the corner catching dust. That said, I still have my iMac which I could not do without (for developing apps etc)

That's what I had to do to reserve one. The apple store guy looked away when I inputted my details

Reserved a 32gb Wifi on Saturday, had it in my hands on Monday. They said Monday was their first delivery since Wednesday, previously to that they had been getting them daily.

So going by the same time scale, the store might not get their next delivery til Monday. The day before my parents head home. Cutting it fine but hope it'll be ok.

Have they bothered to announce the Euro pricing yet?

July release here is so much of a joke...

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,642 Mod ✭✭✭✭Graham

Current Euro pricing for the basic model (16GB WiFi) is either €479 or €499, I don't think pricing in Ireland has been announced yet.

I notice that the Ships By date in the UK store has been pushed back a week to June 7th.

Demand > supply it would seem. I'd love to know how many they'll sell by the end of the year. 3.5 million is my guess.

Seen this. Seems stock will still be available in stores on 28th.

One part of me can see this as a simple supply and demand issue, but the cynic in me sees something else. It would be best for Apple if the TV news reports on the 28th show as many people as possible milling around Apple Stores. By moving the new pre-orders shipping date to June they're encouraging everyone who would have preordered in the next couple of weeks to queue for the cameras on launch day.

    hey all,

i've been waiting on an iPad delivery from the US now for 9 working days so far.......

just wondering how much longer it should take from your experience?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

Took mine about 2 working days to get to Ireland. Another week in customs and had it about 12 days after postage total.

Bought an iPad for mt girlfriend from the states for her bday. A cousin of mine posted it over from Denver. It arrived on friday and the guy who delivered it didnt ask for payment of any vat or customs? Has anyone else got experience of this? Should I expect a bill in the door from customs in the next few days? Have ABC player up and running with blackvpn, its brilliant! Any other apps people would recommend? I hear Pandora is pretty cool, Cheers.

You'll probably get a bill from the courier in the next week or so. you'll have to pay by credit card over the phone. If it does come to that, make sure you specify that the currency is euros.

I got a bill from fedex a few years ago and when they tried to process the payment in Sterling the system rejected it and cancelled the payment.

I started getting payment notices through the post and eventually a debt collector phoned me. Took about 2 months to get it sorted.
