Virgin Atlantic/ Irish Independent advertsing screw-up?

I just flicked on to the Irish Independent website to read some news, namely this page, when I was distracted by the banner advertisement at the top. It is a flash ad for Virgin Atlantic, with several different frames, and reads as follows:

    1. Lost your credit history somewhere over the Atlantic?
    2. Obtaining a credit card in the U.S. may be difficult,
    3. but as fellow Brits, Virgin Atlantic can help.
    4. >Apply now
    in less than 10 minutes

    *numbering and bolding mine.

Does anyone else think it is odd that Virgin Atlantic are telling us that we are "Brits" on the website of one of our national newspapers, and that the Independent didn't notice this? Or do google place the ads maybe? Someone messed up anyway, pretty stupid mistake to make, 800 years and all that!

Yep, contextual advertising............ They detected you were a Virgin.

I agree, but I doubt the Indo had anything to do with. Nor did an individual in Google or whatever the advertising company was. No-one places the ads, they're generated based on what you're looking up.

    Really, does it matter?

Yeah, but they're country/region specific based on your I.P address presumably. Which is why, for example, we see ads for Irish car insurance and not just any car insurance company in the world. It seems that Virgin think we are 'British', which wasn't even correct when we were in the U.K. Either that or they just can't be bothered designing separate ads.

Doesn't really matter I suppose, you'd just think they'd be more careful about such things. I don't think Israelis would be very happy going on to the Jerusalem Post website and seeing "As fellow Arabs, we offer the best packages on suicide belts, coffins and tombstones. Stop into our offices in Ramallah now, and be blown away be our bargains". :pac:

Your not being serious? It's a silly mistake it's not like it's in the print version or anything, even if it was I still wouldn't care.
