Those machines should all be just taken out the back and given a good smacking. I work part time in a supermarket, we have one of these machines and when the machine does this customers get thick about it with us. Not sure why, but it does get annoying every single ****ing weekend.

I like the way that all of the notes spray out of the ATM when 3 cherries appear on the screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Wheelsonthebus

I wouldn't mind if it let you go back and select a different amount but no, it just stops the whole transaction, spits out the card, and there you are left out in the cold.

Ah, it's the little things, but every times this happens I feel like putting my foot through the screen.

I remember this one time, about 2 years ago, I was on my way to a poker game and was at the ATM to withdraw €100. I was also on the phone at the same time. I put in my card/PIN etc and went on my merry way. Got to poker hall a few mins later and realised that I forgot to take the money out of the machine!!!!!!!!

Legged back to it and two girls were there. They looked at me nervously as I asked them if there was money in the machine when they arrived. They said no, and I was full sure one of them pocketed it as it was obvious they were the only people to approach the machine since I was there. P1ssed off, I just took off home. Thankfully it was a clever ATM and it had sucked my money back in before anyone got there. :)

The machines get a chuckle out of it.

It's all the fun they get, let them have it.

    Eh?

They get fingered by several hundred strangers a day! Sometimes I dream of reincarnating as an ATM. Alas, I can't see it happening. :(

Surely the machine cant display this message until it determines how much you want to take out.

What happens if a person goes to the machine and wants to take out a sum that is a multiple of €50.

Ever think of that did you?

If I wasn't banned from Ranting and Raving I'd move this over there.

Anyway, take out a $50 and only spend $20 or under. Saves having to go back again to an ATM. Or use a debit card.

    Quit your bitching!

The new Anglo Irish ATM machine.

Having given it serious thought, the gaming aspect of ATMs is taking shape with a newly designed menu:

    1. Balance Enquiry?
    2. Withdraw Funds?
    3. Gamble Balance? 1. Property?
    ...........................2. Shares?
    ...........................3. Mystery Prize?
    ...........................4. Seanie's Bingo?

The additions to the ATM menus would solve the banking deficit, as only the real suckers would end up paying for it (and not the suckers paying for it now).

Why cant it? Why cant it tell you that it only has fifties left?

It could just simply display that this machine only has fifties left after you put in your PIN- as an advisory for you to make your selection.
How would that in any way effect someone who wants to take out a sum that is a multiple of €50????????

What on earth are you talking about?

By taking €50 out and spending €20- I'd never have to return to an ATM again in my life? Money runs out eventually when you buy things. You eventually have to return to an ATM no matter how much you take out.

Plus you honestly think I'm wasting my time trying to get €20 euro out of an ATM?

I dont like using debit cards to pay for things cos it wastes my time and the time of others behind me.

But considering you're from the land of EFTPOS I wouldn't expect you to understand that.

Oh EFTPOS, now there's something that really makes you want to stab people in the neck.

Why cant it? Why cant it tell you that it only has fifties left?

It cant because they are programmed by muppets. I remember an ATM which let me go through with my transaction and then told me my PIN number was incorrect. Spit out card. Start again. That used to be common. Think about how they flow charted that user experience.

    OP is absolutely right.

    1) Out of £50s. Simple UI. €50 crossed out on top.
    2) Cant give me the money I typed in. Suggest the nearest larger amount. Muppets. If you are out of tens and I ask for 110, suggest 120. If also out of 20s suggest the 150.

    and so on.

Any multiple of 50 can be handled with tens. The OP was taking out less than 50.

    Anyway it is bollocks.

Ya I agree with you. I mean "it should be able to do this" rather than "why cant it do this" I accept it might not actually be able to do this... but it's so simple a concept that it should.

He's not really angry at the fact they only have 50s left, it's the fact that they don't tell you they've only 50s left until you've made the transaction.

A simple "This machine only gives multiples of 50" on the start up screen would be a lot easier.

They should have a special peasant atm for people who want to withdraw less than 50 euro imo :pac:

The biggest mystery about in store atms's is why if you use a cash card you push it in and remove it before proceeding but it keeps a laser card in the machine throughout the transaction.

    They definitely can do it.

Some Ulster Bank machines tell you what notes are available after you have entered your PIN. It's better then being told "Sorry we only have multiples of €X" after you have selected the amount of money you want to withdraw, but it would be better if they displayed which notes are available on the screen before you even insert your card.

That's the only half-decent thing I have to say about Ulster Bank machines though - most of them are slow as fuck compared to machines of other branches.

I think the reason they don't do this is to limit the number of connections the ATM has to make to the bank(Which is the slowest part of the process and the riskiest in terms of security) and the reason why it ends the transactions nd you have to start again would also be for security because atms only allow one request tot he bank for each transaction.

It's not less than €50, it's multiples of €50 I'm talking about you clown.

So for example you want to take out €120, which is the highest option, it wont let you because it cant give it in multiples of €50.

    Some people, honestly.
