I can remember some things but strangely not most...

Definitely worst one was running across a road as a kid and just barely making it to the other side, seemingly I ignored the car that had almost ran me over and missed me by maybe two inches:eek:

This one is cycling related: I was cycling back home from Blanchardstown to the city centre, and was going over the M50 flyover (yes you really should not do this on a bicycle) when this articulated lorry pulls up like right beside me and nearly took me under the front wheel:eek:

Another time involved me and a few mates getting chased by 10+ pikeys with weapons because they mistook us for some other lads...fook that was scary!

    Quality thread!
Yes, the night I took 3 boxes of magic mushrooms, 2 and a half tabs of acid and half a bar of hash chocolate in Amsterdam, then went to Madame Tussauds. I had never been to a Madame Tussauds before, I had no idea that they have a chamber of horrors in there. I went in, totally off my head, expecting to see nice happy celebrity statues, and instead found myself in a place of unimaginably horrific nightmares. I was so scared I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I had wondered why the woman at the start had asked us if we had any heart problems or anything like that. As it was in Amsterdam, they really should have asked if anyone was wasted beyond belief before letting them in.

I have a genuine pain in my chest after laughing so hard at that!

I went to the US on a J1 in 2002. Me and a some friends were staying in NYC for a few nights before we headed on down to Jersey. They went out for a few jars but I was only 20 at the time and figured I wouldn't have much joy as I had heard pubs were really strict there and all.
Was in the hostel and I decided I'd go for a walk, it was a lovely night, nice and humid, lots of people sitting outside restaurants, coffee shops etc..plenty of people about....plenty of noise and hustle and bustle in general.

So I'm walking along and next thing I hear this earth shattering bang, crazy loud....It was literally like time stopped...everybody on the street walking and in the area froze in their tracks. Everyone looked around at each other with a huge 'OHHH SH*T' look on their faces. I can remember the absolute fear of god in me, I was completely frozen in my tracks, looked up at the buildings all around me just waiting to see a plane smash through it. I could see the same thought in everyone's eyes around me. Then another unbelievabley loud bang, and another....I honestly thought it was anti-aircraft fire at this stage, the sound of it was ear piercing, it was like something out of a movie. Everyone just started scuttling off, some running.

I presume it was just fireworks or something, but because of the tall buildings even though it was very close you couldn't see where it was coming from, which made it HORRIBLE. Add the fact that EVERYONE else in a crowded place froze too...I think it's a bit like 'if you see the air hostess panic you know you're in trouble' kind of a situation. I turned on my heels and headed straight back toward the hostel. I heard a guy muttering as he passed at how stupid an idea it was only a few months after 9/11...I looked at him and wanted to say 'Too f*ckin' right!', but instead just nodded with no doubt a big massive I-just-sh*t-myself head on me... will NEVER EVER forget that.

First time I had sleep paralysis, before I knew what it was.

Woke up completely unable to move or breathe, with what felt like someone pushing down on my chest. All I could do was move my eyes. Felt like someone was at the end of the bed out of sight just standing there. Then I felt the bed springs lower like someone was sitting down beside me.Couldn't even scream because the muscles were paralysed.

Could move and breathe again after about a minute but it was absolutely terrifying. The relief when I could move again was incredible.

Was only when I read up on it that I realised it's pretty common and that some people get pretty bad hallucinations.

I get this too, it's ****ing terrifying the first few times. My hallucinations always involve a screaming noise which seems to be just at my ear, doesn't help :(. I'm so used to it by now it usually doesn't bother me.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Oh this too :( I used to get the hallucinations with this too, but where I thought skeletons were trying to kill me, and sometimes a demonic creature wanted to crush my skull:(

I used to love getting on a planes ontill about 2 years ago i was coming back from a long weekend in newcastle in the worst winds ive ever witnessed. We took off and halfway through the 30 min flight the plane was all over the place, everyone on board was terrified and grown men were just short of crying. I was sitting at the emergency exit over the wing as im 6ft4 and need extra leg room. I was looking out the window and the wing was shaking rapidly, this continued all the way back but when the plane was on approach the pilot told us the wind was so strong that we would be landing at a higher speed. I was thinking to myself were gonna die. So as we got closer to the runway the plane was jerking to the left and i could feel the pilot componsating for the sittuation. Then about ten seconds before we hit the ground the plane lifted and dropped to the left really fast and we slammed into the runway. we hit the ground at a crazy speed and i was afraid the runway would runout. The pilot turned on the reverse thrust and the noise was deafoning everyone was sitting quiet with their hands over there faces ontill the plane came to a stop. It was by far the most afraid for my life ive ever been and because of it im afraid to fly now. Last year i got on a plane again and had to pile up on valum to stay calm, i took loads and was still nervous so i took a few more, id only fastened my belt for takeoff ontill it hit me. The next thing i no im in gran canaria with my girlfriend and air hostess trying to wake me with drool all over my face my hood up and a pair of sun glasses on. My girlfriend told me that every one on the plane was looking at me funny the whole flight and a few laughing. But it was definatly worth it coz if the plane did crash i woulda been none the wiser......... Also im not exactly afraid of spiders but ive seen a lot of massive ones crawling round the place lately... they give my the hebyjebiess

Serving drinks at work, I picked up a pint glass which had just come out of the washer. It shattered in my hand, scared the bejaysus out of me.
    Anyway.
Rinsing the glass off my fingers, noticed a small cut on the inside of my little finger's top knuckle, so stuck a plaster on it. 10 minutes later, finger is starting to hurt badly. I take the plaster off, thinking I might have missed a bit of glass, and a splinter of glass SHOOTS UP THROUGH MY VEIN, towards the palm. I could FEEL this fcuker as it moved. Squeezed the base of my finger, managed to trap it. spent the next 10 minutes, sweating more than I ever have in my life, squeezing my finger to force the glass splinter back up the vein to the cut, so I could pick it out with a toothpick (which I held in my teeth, wasn't about to let go of my finger!). I just kept thinking "If this gets into my bloodstream, I'm fcuked". Managed to get it out eventually, but still have a sinking dread that tiny grains of glass are floating around inside me somewhere. :(

Had dinner last week and invited MC Hammer and Chico. I made the mistake of asking what time it was! ..... The resulting bedlam was very frightening indeed!

LOL.... I only just heard that joke! I had to use it!

I woke up when i was 14 to a urgent knocking on my door, daylight had just broke so i think it was around 6am. My mam was saying that there are 4 guys at the door and asked my brother (who had just turned 18) to come down with her...

I was kinda groggy and didn't really take that bit in, until next thing i know there are 4 fellas in my room, with my brother being shepherded in, and i heard them talking about the back being covered... i kinda came to pretty quickly with one of them asking "is there any illegal firearms in the room?" - it was the fecking CAB!!

To give you some background - this was 15 years ago, we're a middle class family in Clontarf (for those of you who know Dublin) and i still remember the thoughts running through my head - wtf is happening, it was all very aggressive and power hungry, my brother was arrested and brought to Lucan garda station. The thoughts that ran through my head were all mad things like - what has my brother done to bring this to our home...

Turns out his crime was being friendly to people in his work place (squash ireland, reception) - one of whom was the monk. Thats all they had - and some pr*ck signed off a search warrant and the subsequent arrest??!?

This was all post Veronica Guerin, and while i'm glad those responsible were brought to justice - i'd question how many other innocent families had a similar experience?

Scarey stuff, still hate the guards to this day...

The time I received a bullet in the mail from a formerly prominent Northern Paramiliary force was pretty scary.
The job I was doing at the time was opposed by some people in their political wing, but I was never expecting that degree of intimidation.
Had to move out of the house for a few weeks until the issue got resolved.
Eventually, some big scary men met me in Dublin and assured me they were sorry for my inconvenience, and that it should never have happened.
Turning up for that meeting was nearly scarier.

Had a crash on my bike (as in bicycle) a few years back when training for races, 65-70kph in the rain. I hit the ground and slid onto the opposite side of the road. I was going down the road backwards and couldn't see if there was anything coming. Probably slid for about 4-5 seconds in total, felt like an absolute eternity just waiting to go under a wheel.

I'd a cliffhanger out in Howth as well.

Couldn't get a footing because I was dangling at an overhang. The grass slipping through my hands and my legs going ninety cos I couldn't get a footing. It was about 30ft drop onto the rocks below. Me 'ed would have been smashed like an egg. Lucky enough a mate got to me and grabbed me by the wrist with about a second (tops) to go.

...something truly terrifying about an impending fall :(

Christ, yeah, I had a version of that myself, come to mention it.
I used to ride a little honda gapper around the city in Dublin. One night I was flying back to the northside from Ranelagh and it was lashing rain and I had no wet gear on, so was in a hurry to get back.
Coming around Harcourt street, the back wheel lost grip in the rain and I slid right across the road in front of a lorry.
Thankfully, the driver saw me, slammed on the brakes and stopped nearly on top of me.
The cops in the garda station came running out and took me in for a cup of tea which was sound of them. I was well rattled. I have a burn on my leg which got caught beneath the bike and I totally lost my nerve. I drive a big saloon car now. Never went out on two wheels again.

Once when I was body boarding on a school trip. A wave flipped over the board, and I could see the sand coming towards me really fast. Time sort of slowed down and I remember thinking "I'm going to smash my head, god will I drown". I did smash up my face and chipped a tooth but nothing serious.

Another one was when I was in a car with my mum, and this huge rental car came round a corner really fast ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD! He didn't swerve, so mum had to swerve onto the wrong side of the road. Thankfully there was nothing else coming round the corner. I really thought we were going to die. Your man just kept going, we had to stop we got such a fright, we sat there for 15 mins before we stopped shaking!

after my grandad died, us grandkids would stay with our nana, so she wouldn't be alone.
one particular night, i went to bed with my nana (i was the youngest) and my sister and cousin were allowed stay up playing the megadrive (my fcuking megadrive can i just say! where's the fairness there??)

    anyway, i couldn't sleep.
i heard the knocker on the front door banging, and the other pair opening the door and closing it.
was a little confused at this stage but just lay there trying to sleep.

after awhile, i heard the other two coming into the room to go to sleep.
they were whispering frantically. i could hear them saying "maybe its daideo (what we called our grandad) protecting the house", "but why would he want to scare us".
well, with that, the sweat started rolling.

they were whispering for a little longer but eventually fell asleep.
then this tapping started. one, two, three stop. one, two, three stop.
it was coming from outside the window.

i lay there, beat to my nana in the absolute leathers of sweat, my heart absolutely pounding in my mouth.
it was starting to get bright outside, i think i nearly smothered under the duvet, for fear of peeping my head outside the covers and seeing something at the window.

it was the longest night of my entire life, i have never been so frightened ever.
i eventually fell asleep and got up the following day, told the others what had happened.

outside, there was a stack of concrete blocks at the side of the garage. on top of the blocks was a hammer and a chisel.
the top block had a large semi-circle chipped out of it, completely gone.
that was the sound i heard. one, two, three stop.

i dunno what happened that night, probably nothing tbh, but christ almighty, i was absolutely terrified.

there are some seriously frightening senarios posted here.
My is not serious but gave me a fright at the time.

I was in Mexico on holidays with a friend. We paid for sun loungers on the beach and as it was a really hot day we dragged the loungers under the shade of a couple of palm trees. I was half dozing with my eyes closed when I felt something on my left shoulder. I swiped at it without opening my eyes. My friend looked over and really casually said, "you've got a cockroach on your shoulder". I screamed, leapt up, did a kind of mad hopping dance on the beach. The cockroach had long gone by this stage but I was so freaked out I couldn't stop shivering. That was the day I learned that cockroaches have wings, do fly and like to drop out of palm trees.

I'd just die on the spot I think:eek:. When I was in Florida one time, this particular night I was lying on the bed reading. I was aware of something flickering at the corner of my vision..I thought it was my hair blowing in the breeze from the air conditioner so I pushed it behind my ear but the thing was still there. I looked around and right beside me on the locker, standing up on my sunglasses on it's back legs was an enormous cockroach. It was nearly the length of my laptop screen from end to tip of it's waving feelers..it was like a big shiny brown tortoise with feelers. I nearly fcukin' died! I teleported from the bed over to the corner of the room in half a second flat.. I didn't touch the ground. My oh and two sons were lookiing at me in bemusement with 'wtfs wrong with you?' expressions. Dunno how they got rid of it...probably put a lead on it and dragged it out the door...massive it was.

Last year I was over there again on hols. I was in the bathroom one morning, when I came out, my oh had set the wee table for breakfast. I sat down ready to eat my Rice Krispies and there right in front of me beside my bowl was an upturned glass with a dirty big cockroach in it standing up with its horrible jointed legs pressed against the side. Think I bounced my head off the ceiling with the fright..Smartarse b*stards, my family.

I never liked going fast down hills on my bike and would always have the brakes half on, speed wasn't something I particularly liked! But once, three summer ago, I was cycling to an abbey with a friend and there was a hill before it and I decided why not give it a try!! I let loose, going really fast down the hill, turned the corner to the end and there was a massive gate in front of me! I was going much too fast to stop. I was terrified! Choices were to go head first into the gate, or jump of the bike into the gravel. I jumped. I still shiver thinking about it, I hit the ground a lot harder than I thought I would. Some builders were nearby and saw my fall and came rushing over helping me bandage up my cuts. Really nice of them!

Another time, when I was ten or so, I was in France swimming in the sea. The waves were Massive that day so I was having great craic in the water. I was careful to keep out of the way of the rocks-which were insanely sharp. But then I went into a wave, was turned every which way under water so I didn't even know which way the ground was and all that was rushing through my mind was that I didn't know where the rocks were anymore and I was going at great speeds towards shore, which could have rocks. Terrifying. So glad when I got out!

When my dad and my uncle decided to see just how fast the car could go. We were back in Germany, no speed limits on some parts of the motorway. I was terrified, loadsa cars everywhere, top speed. Not my idea of fun!

I was on my own at this small bus station in Rhode Island waiting for a connection. It was a very dodgy area and the station itself was closed so everyone had to wait outside. As it was 11pm, it was only me and some elderly gentleman at the stop. Again, I had a bad feeling about the area and on my own - so I was a little nervous to begin with.

I heard some shouting down the road behind me. Bout 100 FT down the road a massive fight broke out on a corner of the street. There was about 8-10 guys tearing into each other. Must have only been looking for 30 secs (felt like 30 mins though) and it spilled around the other side of the corner (where i couldnt see). Heard two loud *BANGS*. Me thinks it was a gun.

Never so happy to see a bus.

They say when people are in terrifying situations the first thing they do is Pray.
numb first, then run, then pray while running, remember mine was god keep me going, dont let me trip on something, when you see a fellow about 15 yards coming at you with a spiked ball at the end of chain swinging you take flight and then pray
my brother is still nightmarish about it
i have had cancer since, and prayed first thing when i found out, that was cured by very good doctors
but still to this day, the spiked ball is the one that had the most profound effect, i had a good life since, i should say great life
