The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is set to announce a blanket ban on anybody over the age of 75 driving a vehicle on a public road. Its their latest attempt to cut down on the amount of raod accidents claiming that members of this age bracket are responsible for a high proportion of road deaths.

seems a little harsh to me in fairness

This won't happen. The most they will do is make these people resit their driving test, which will be a defacto ban for most of them.

It would also be a nail in the coffin for the current government in the next general election. We had a hint of this when the HSE proposed the blanket withdrawl of old age medical cards.

The current government aren't going to get elected regardless of what they do. They may as well undertake unpopular measures that need to be taken for the good of the nation.

Why not just straight on shoot all over 75's?
They might still want to cross the road walking and cause accidents that way.

There is only 1 ban that would make sense. Ban L drivers till they have a proper license.
Funny you say this, my father whos 88 and drives everywhere always said when his licence is taken from him ¨you might as well shoot me¨ He´s not the best driver but not any worse than a lot of younger drivers. Sounds like a dumb idea but not surprised the way things are going. You can´t fart these days without filling in a form or passing a test of some sort.

If it cuts down on accidents and fatalities then it is a good idea.

There are plenty of ways to reduce accidents and fatalities, but that doesn't automatically make them good ideas.

heard it from somebody who works for them - set to go public with it tomorow

I heard you were stirring shít ;)

Some L drivers drive better than people with full licenses.

    This smells like BS.

I'd ban under 25's from driving instead

Why not take it case by case? Too difficult for ye?

if it saves one life ANY measure is worth it ... :pac:

Government announce they plan on importing enough bubble wrap to cover everybody to reduce risk of injury :P

I think the u-25's are definitely the worst offenders, i say that because of my everyday experience of them on the roads.

Yummy mummies and their SUVs are my target for hatred on the roads, that and anybody that drives a jeep.

Restricting all vehicles to a top speed of 10km/h would cut down on accidents and fatalities, are you in favour of that?

The whole "If it saves one life" line is a load of boll0cks.

What a fitting name, lol :P

It's the spotty little cnunts in the 'souped up' Honda civics who cause the most accidents.

Fcukers are high on blow coming from the disco at 0230 and 'forget 'to take the corner.

These are the jerks who cause the most accidents, not poor auld Meeehawl driving carefully.

Just saw a modifyed car at a local shop with a large inscription on the back window...'Galway Chancers---coming to a crossroads near you soon'
I didn't wait long enough to see if the driver was over 75, somehow i doubt it.

5 pages into this thread and the op hasn't put up a source of the information... Worse still, we're actually arguing over it.

That would be total age discrimination. The ability of people in their 70s/80s etc can vary hugely. My stepdad is 73, drives a 90km round trip 7 days a week to work on his farm and is as fit as a fiddle. My colleague's parents of the same age are both in a care home with amnesia.

The annual medical is the only fair way to do it. Blanket ban my arse.

How about we ban everyone from driving?

would sure cut down on the deaths on the road! although we'd then have to deal with the cuts and grazes statistics from bicycles, they're gonna be nasty.

whether this is true or not(which I reckon we all know it isn't) this will always stand true, RSA, FUCK OFF WITH YOUR IDIOTIC IDEAS ON WHAT ROAD SAFETY IS.

but do you have a proper public transport system back home?

I agree that the licence should be a privilage - but theres plenty of people in rural ireland who require a vehicle to get to the local shop...and making it financially difficult to get a licence will only result in people driving without licences.

I dont know if its proper because i havent used it in 7 years.

Well, if they introduced this method and set the prices of the courses and exams low then it would depend on your driving knowledge, skill if you have a license and not on your financial situation, you get me?

This has got to be BS.

Have you ever actually watched the news? How often do you hear, "An eighty year old man was fatally injured this morning and two passengers are in a critical condition after the car in which they were travelling left the road..."?

It's more often than not younger drivers who are involved in fatal car collisions.

Older drivers tend to be more careful, drive a lot slower and while they can be annoying on the roads, personally I wouldn't consider them a danger.
You don't hear about road deaths involving old people because nobody cares

Don't get me started on the RSA:mad:.Saving lives my a**e. Its all about money! money! money! with them. What about Gay byrne? the chairman of the RSA, he is over 75 isn't he?Stupid b*****ds:rolleyes:

Aaaah Jimser, take a fcuking tablet there pal.

It's the pizza faced jerks who think they are Ayrton Senna who are the problem.

Unfortunately like our friend Ayrton they are dead.

Little gel haired cnunts doing 50 in Dunnes carpark, we all know them:rolleyes:

There's your problem, the stats and the cemeteries prove it;)

I presume this is BS? there are a lot of drivers over 75 who are perfectly capable and who would be lost without their cars... I do think there should be a ban on drivers over 75 driving certain types of vehicles though e.g. trucks, tractors, and similar machinery..

how are 75 year olds dangerous driving tractors? They are going to be off public roads most of the time. Think of all the farmers who would be lost....

This is a load of BS. You're not instantly a bad driver the second you turn 75  Sure some over 75's are bad drivers just like some under 75's are. Doesn't mean you can tar everyone with the same brush but that's what we tend to do in this country. Anyway it's not going to happen and if it does I guarantee over 75's will stick up two fingers and continue to drive and I really can't see the Gardai stopping them driving either. Nonsense.

heh heh, these pizza faced jerks are making me laugh:D

Look at it this way, 75 year old still driving, proves he can drive, the guy/gal is still alive.!!

Meanwhile the gimps who think they know it all, are buried out in the local cemo, after failing to take the turn at 0300.

Stats prove it. go figure boys.

There are some horrendously bad older drivers, hell some middle aged drivers appear to have gotten their licences free with tokens from kelloggs but I think a blanket ban is completely OTT, much better to make sure the over 60s have regular eye/driving tests. It's a bit rich to have rediculously slack rules regarding divers and driving on L plates for years and then suddenly be demanding a high standard of driving on the roads... :pac:

At least they have licenses, not like gel haired gooks driving around on Provo licenses.

    Stats prove it buddy.

Stats prove the people who are dying in these crashes are 'pizza faced' and 'gel haired' ?
Where'd you get those stats from?

Eh, loads of them don't have licences, loads of drivers of all ages just took their L plates down and drive around as they always have done without any formal driving training whatsoever...if anything it's younger drivers in general that are a better quality of driver who have formal lessons and actually have full licences - a minority of souped up corsa drivers/insurance dodgers aside...

Any link or proof of this? because, in my opinion, thats a load of media-generated bollocks.

No. I made that statement based on what I see happen on the roads around here. Is a 300bhp car needed on windy Irish roads? Hell no.

Just wondering where are ye all finding these statistics? I'd be quite interested in seeing them but can't seem to find them anywhere. Link?

Don't you listen to the radio?
