Why are groups of politicians called Political 'Parties'?

Because they do feck all except enjoy themselves at our expense?

What would be a more appropriate name for them - Political .....'s ?

As an Irish person I worry not about the constraints of the Inglish language. I usually refer grammar/usage pedants to Ulysses by Joyce and ask them to consider Joyce's usage in what is considered the greatest novel of the last century in the English language.

That's partly because so few people have read it, even fewer finished it and of those about a quarter liked it, assuming they could remember how it started.:)
