Could someone just confirm the layout of the paper for me? I was missing for the last week of lectures due to illness and I was informed that the paper is laid out as follows: We do one question/section either from Arapad, Tracey Skillington or Joseph Ruane.

Is that correct as it seems like not a lot for an exam?

Have a look online at the papers, looks like you do one question from each section. All the papers are online Library - under the search it says take me to exam papers, if you are on campus you don't have to put in a password, if you are off campus you must create a library account, name, student no and password, no problems. Looks like all the first year sociology exams are similiar, one question per section

The previous papers are useless. I've gone over them a few times and once you go past 2008 or so the layout is completely different. Also on all of the previous papers there are questions on topics that we didn't even cover this year. As far as I know the course was slightly changed this year, hence my query on the exam question.

    The layout has changed:

From the three sections, you must answer TWO. That gives 90 minutes per question. You can leave out a section of your choice.

If you're doing the religion question, it's safe to say that the paradigm is quite important. :D

Oh, and Tracy Skillington said she would be looking at about 6-8 pages for an answer because she gave us certain themes to look at, and they should be covered extensively.

Cheers for that. Skillington is looking for 6 - 9 pages? I didn't realise this was the leaving cert all over again.

    Cheers for the information though!

Both Dr. Skillington and Dr. Ruane said it. Also it was said at tutorials.

Arapad's module was just as bad if not worse than Piet's. It's more of a Philosophy than a social science with the two of them which is slightly disheartening. I'll be doing Skillington's and Ruane's questions in the exam. I've spent the last few hours going over my notes for Arapad and it just isn't sticking. It's safe to say I won't be continuing with the subject next year.

i will be doing skillingtons and arpads part as iam not 100% what kind of questions ruane will be asking as i was not there for his final lecture and missed last tutorial because of an oral.

There is a lot to Ruane's but the advantage is that it's easy to waffle about. That's why i'm taking the chance with his section.

This is tomorrow, first exam for me, so it's a tad bit nerve racking. I feel i'm very well prepared for Skillington's section, basically because i've decided to argue against her points. Thank you Norman Finkelstein.

As for Ruane's section, I think that's going to be a lot more difficult to pin down an answer for but I think there'll be a lot of room to get across various points, i.e. waffle.

Not a Sociology student here. Don't be afraid to go against the grain and argue your opinion. I'm sure lecturers like to read something fresh instead of going with the same 'ol. Just back up your points is all. Best of luck in the exam!

My mate is doing Politics, and one of the modules in 2nd year is a Philosophy module. All the recommended reading for the module are books written by the lecturer, so in an essay my mate went about disagreeing with everything the lecturer had written about. He got 60%. :P

IMO lectures should not be allowed state opinions, they should merely act to deliver information, and allow students to use it as they will.

I've been told many times that it's your opinion and disagree/agree, whatever if you can make an argument out of it. I completely agree. Surely that's the template for lecturers when they're marking etc.?

The exam went pretty well and i'm happy enough with how I got on. All in all, it was a good start to the exams.

Ha! I think I failed, even though it's hard to say. :D

I wrote 6 pages in total, one question alone meant to be 6-8 pages. But I did write down the main points, so I never know, might get a surprise pass. :D

luckily i got my articles early in april. ya it was so stupid they all should have been up on blackboard. 300+ students will all be looking for books at the month off/week before the exam. or even if we paid €5 at the start of the year to have the things photocopied for us and given out during class

was that the one by Habermas? Holocaust Trauma in a Media Age or something? I took it out and thought it was useless. :D

I just read the Patrick Kelly thesis that was on Blackboard for it.
