I'm sure he is and I'm sure they do, and the inter faith center is open to them to do all the religious antics they want! BUT....this is a university I fail to see why mailing lists for the entire student population needs to receive emails saying how some nice guy is praying for us.
(I have blocked the emails btw)

Yes, I went to a catholic school where religion was shoved down your throat, I don't remember opting to go to a religious university so I don't see why I have to make an effort to avoid it in DCU as opposed to letting those who want to be involved with that choose it. It doesn't happen in every university btw.

I'm not Christian either, haven't been for a good 7 years now. I dealt with idiots hurling abuse at me all through school because of my beliefs. But Christianity is still the majority religion in DCU and in Ireland in general. A lot of people like those mails, and the option to block them is always there. Plus, without the religious aspect, it's a nice sentiment.

I'm not just talking about Christianity, religion being advertised in any guise in a university is ridiculous imo, I've no problem with the facilities being there, I don't need to be reminded about them though. I don't think it's a nice sentiment either, frankly I think it undermines your academic efforts. Of course I can block them, I just disagree with it, like I said before, doesn't happen in other well known colleges in Dublin. I think a lot less people like those emails than you think, you would get hard pushed to find one religious person in the department I'm in.

Or at the very least, have the ones that are in there working. :/

Are all the sockets by the front on the top floor still broken?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭Tiroskan

Yeah. Doesn't bother me, since I leave my laptop at home if I want to study, but in an hour, if it's busy, there'll easily be 10-15 people who come over, plug something in, sit down and then have to pack everything away and find another socket that works once they realise. It's irritating to have that many people coming and going and knocking about as well =/

I know people will hate me for thinking this.
but Id have no problem with Facebook being blocked in the library.

...just the times you go in to work on assignments somewhere peaceful, and can't get a computer ANYWHERE because so many people are on Facebook, or even worse Farmville/ other flash games for hours...

not everyone wants to have to carry heavy laptops around, and you can't leave a laptop down to go bathroom or get a book unless someone promises to watch it.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from. That's why if I ever really need to work I use the computers instead of a laptop, because I know I'll just feel guilty if I go near Facebook on a computer when it's obvious people need them for something more constructive.

But if you've a laptop in there needless to say you should be allowed go on what you want.

Well that goes without saying. Do they stop you if you try that?

No not at all. I was just saying that, if they do ever decide to block Facebook in the library, they make sure they just do it on the computers and not the entire wifi in the place.

Don't you just hate it when LiboCop asks you to stop watching RedTube in the library?

Ha, ok. I was about to go on a war path! They'd have to block the site from Laplan X, right? Or manually do it on each machine. Neither of them are good options.

ye would be pretty hard to just block it in the library, would people just have the cop on to not good on those sites in the library ffs.

You'd also have to block every proxy site in existence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭andrew163

It'd be fairly simple for ISS to block it from a selected set of machines (i.e. just the library but not wifi). The problem is, as Skylinehead said, blocking the proxies that people could use too, although I don't think the casual user flicking through facebook while procrastinating from study would either know how (double proxy!) or be bothered enough to go to that much effort.

CSD always had a policy of not blocking anything. Unless ISS has changed this, I can't see the SU president getting anything like this implemented.

And yet what about the proxy blocking all video from streaming sites such as ustream or justin.tv?

And what about them having blocked ow.ly for about two months because there were apparent phishing attempts using ow.ly short links?

I said CSD. I don't know ISS' policy.

Also, I've never heard of these sites, so I presume they are of no loss to us.

    Mmmmmmmm, sacrilicious.

Cant say I care much about the interfaith mails, I block them. I cant say I see why we need an interfaith centre when the university provides the same services in a secular fashion, but all the other universities have a chaplaincy and the religious do seem to make good use of it.

I don't think I'v ever received an email from the interfaith centre come to think of it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭public_enemy

I've received all of 13 different mails (6 of which were actually related to charity fundraisers rather than religious services) from Fr. Joe in the last 3 years. Sure, they're not relevant to me either, but I really don't think that 4.33333333 emails a year ought to be a pressing concern for next year's SU president.
