3 Very Noobs - where to go?

Hi,

I've been charged with bringing my o/h, her mother and sister to learn how to hit a ball in a general direction.

I don't know where to start, as I'm afraid if we go out to a public course we'll piss off everyone around us. Do we go to a P&P course? If so where's the best option?

Would I be better off bringing em to a driving range and letting them loose?

Basically, where do absolute noObs go?

BTW, we're on the Northside of Dublin, but would be happy to travel a bit if necessary.

If they have literally never hit a ball before the driving range is probably best. Not for the purpose of not annoying other people, but purely because a game of golf won't be enjoyable if it takes 10 shots to get to the green.

Range is probably the best place to learn to swing and hit the ball, but don't overuse it as its fairly boring and golf isn't meant to be played in driving ranges!

Maybe a par3 course after that. I think theres one at Deer park in Howth.

I don't fancy this task, but if I was you I'd bring them to the driving range next to the coahman's inn two or three times. Then I'd move on to p&p at the Alsaa you wouldn't be annoying anyone here, after that I'd move on to the par 3 in st. Annes park. When you feel that are ready for none holes of golf I'd bring them for a mid week game in deer park.

Elmhall in Celbridge has two pitch and putt courses used to bring my little brother there, one for kids i think and one for adults but even the adult one has tiny little holes, its always fairly quiet and the other players would be of the same standard so wouldnt be too bothered with you. Not that far from north Dublin.

Tend to agree with Paul there.... no point in taking them onto a proper GC till they can atleast hit a ball atleast 100yrds.

You said Northside...... where abouts?
1: range (ward/elmgreen)
2: P&P (brock/tolka valley)
3: Par 3 (balheary/deerpark)

All fairly close to each other and not overly difficult either.

Also Elm green has a DR and P&P on site, could hit a few on the range and then have a go at the P&P without having to change location...... theres also a putting and chipping green too.

Best of luck............................. and just think if it all goes well you can look forward to weekends spent golfing with the mother inlaw and the ball and chain:eek::eek::eek: every mans dream( or is that nightmare).

If your close to Kinsely Id head out to their driving range first, its a decent spot. Its got a cafe as well so you could hit a few balls yourself while they have a natter over your coaching

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for but it might be worth getting someone else to do the initial coaching!

My mother went on one last year (think it was free or just a nominal fee) most of those attending had never picked up a club before.
There's one starting in Donabate on May 10th.

As mentioned, somewhere like Elmgreen would be best advised as there is a proper golf course, driving range and pitch and putt course all on site.

Spend some time but too much time on the driving range, likewise on the practice putting green which I presume they have.

Then play pitch and putt.

The four-ball that I played in cut its teeth at Carrigleade in Carlow. Really top notch par-3 course with some challenging holes. About €10 for a green fee too.

It's OK - I'm sure that after you've had them at the range once or twice they will probably all give up anyway - golf isn't as easy as it looks. Shouldn't be a problem.

Balheary par 3 in swords had an ad in the freebie last week. 9 euro a round at weekend. Might suit you.
