From next July all cigarette packets will have to display a prominent government health warning with graphic images dominating the pack while the brand name will be in tiny standard print at the bottom of the packet. Cigarette company logos are also banned.

Well you can't let Australians think for themselves, now can you? After all it would involve .... thinking.

Hey Gus, I got something to report to ya!'

If they *really* wanted people to stop smoking they would stop all these surgeon-general warnings and instead make cigarettes into the shape of big veiny rubbery cocks. Most men naturally wouldn't want such a thing hanging from their mouths and women wouldn't either when they realised the only reward was nicotine and not jewelery.

Good. Oh and I am well and truly exasperated with terms such as "nanny state" "nannyism" etc. being used to decry any measures a state takes to protect its citizens, the terms are so over used at this stage they amount to a non argument.

Instead of branding this action as "nannyism", why don't you tell us why you think it's a good idea to allow tobacco companies to market their deadly merchandise unhindered.

Tobacco is the only legally available product that, when used as directed, will kill all of its users, slowly and painfully.

If it stops one person geting sick by passive smoke surely its a good thing.

so on one hand, you have people giving out about offensive images damaging/de-sensitising children and on the other, we've got people pushing to get pics of mouldy feet/diseased organs plastered on cigarette boxes?

tis all a bit mad ted

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,417 ✭✭✭Miguel_Sanchez

They can still smoke if they want to, can't they?

Big deal if there's no packaging allowed. If they're that mad for smoking they won't let that put them off.

Ireland doesn't have anti-smoking nannyism - we banned smoking in pubs, offices etc. You're allowed smoke, just do it in the smoking area. If you don't like that, move somewhere else.

For lovers of something that's always had a reputation as a 'hard' and 'cool' thing to do smokers are such big babies sometimes.

Honestly - toughen up would ye?

The price of a pack here is going up by $2.50 from tonight, I was in safeway about an hour ago, a woman bought 2 cartons of cigarettes for $205...

This will put a lot of them off to begin with!

I'd tell ya, but the State has covered Paddy Powers web page with warnings about the danger of gambling.

Hiding them out of sight in a retail outlet at the extra expense to retailers is nannyism. I know one shop that had to replace a just installed machine to one that complied at the cost of several k.

Keep in mind this is a country that has proposed the "great Firewall reef" to protect it's citizens from material on the internet the government finds objectionable, as well as having censorship policies on movies, computer games etc. that borders on the puritanical.

But they let them sponsor confessionals in churches! :D

Although it goes against my liberal ethics there's a part of me that just wished they banned nicotine full stop. We'd be forced to quit then. Yeah, I know it's not the epitome of self discipline but they're incrediably addictive. I'd personally rather have this than just socially ostracising smokers and screwing us with insane taxes. I'm not saying it's right but I can't help but feel it would be a good thing.

Typical Australian move tbh. They love being told what to do over there.

Are you complaining about costs to shops or Nannyism cause they're two different things?

As adults, smokers still know cigarettes are available whether they're on display or not. They can still purchase them if they like.

As I said - smokers need to toughen up a bit and stop whinging and moaning all the time. They're as bad as publicans sometimes, who if you were to believe them are the most put upon section of our society today.

The George would go out of business in a year if that happened.:pac:

Smoking is one of the leading causes of statistics. ;)

Australia is a place with a good average wage (I earn 250 euro more a week here than back home) combined with a ridicilously low cost of living (food, rent, booze, all a fraction of the Irish price) yet all Aussies do is bitch and moan about Kevin Rudd (the PM). They stupid fcuks should try living in a country where if you are lucky enough to actually have a job you will blow half your wage having a few jars at the weekend. As a heavy smoker I am 100% in favour of every possible measure to curb the filth.

Its taxes and levys to combat heavy drinking, which Michael McDowell was so fond of, that is the true definition of nannyism.

Just the way no-one smokes pot now and no-one drank during prohibition?

That smoking is a massive contributor to causing cancer resulting in chemo and surgery? I know. Get off your high horse. I've lost family members to cancer. All of them smoked. Their own damned fault tbh.

McDowell showed balls and initiative, he should be applauded not ridiculed.

What are the costs to the State, Insurance Companies, and Individuals (non-smokers)to treat smokers and passive smoke ailments ?

How about this . Take off the warnings and have smokers/tobacco companies pay for the health care of those who choose to smoke.
