He's not an Irish citizen, therefore he can't commit treason against this country.
It was a joke....hence the big grin

Not treason, that was willful ignorance TBH.

He's not an Irish citizen, therefore he can't commit treason against this country.

Ian Paisley is entitled to Irish citizenship as a result of the Anglo Irish agreement.

Ian Paisley is entitled to Irish citizenship as a result of the Anglo Irish agreement.

Being entitled to it doesn't make him a citizen. So he is currently incapable of treason.

Jeez it was a light hearted throwaway comment. The main reason I said it is precisely because he has chosen not to be a citizen.

As regards the MacMurroughs there aren't any anymore; they reverted to Murphy as well as Kavanagh and Kinsella who are descended from Diarmuid's sons.

I happen to know people with the surname MacMurrough Kavanagh, so they are still a few of them around.

Any list for the Greatest Irish Traitor, which does not feature Leonard MacNally is a bad list.

None of the men in the poll are traitors in any meaningful sense of the word.

    EDIT: Just saw Sceptre's post.

The attempt by Cork people to form their own republic within ours should have been greeted with a measured response. Mass hangings.

They get hope, we get treason!

Rubbish, just get a big chainsaw, lop Cork off and let them take their high pitch whinging to the Atlantic. Everyone's a winner.

Anyone that lived here during the boom years and made their fortunes, and are now abandoning the country rather than staying to try and improve it

    Those are the real traitors

Sure they'll say 'well what can we do' and 'I'm not going to hang around to pay of NAMA hurrhurr'.. but they're cowardly cop outs, and the kind of single minded, money driven people that got the country into this mess in the first place.

My friend's work has completely dried up; he has no money to support his wife and kid - he's coming over here to London & fair play to him. It's a brave move, in my book.

I left Ireland over a decade ago, precisely because the new rich Ireland was beginning to disappear up its own. The sheer vulgarity of it all & the embryonic racism was pissing me off, I'm sad to say.

Of course I miss the place but mankind is nomadic at heart & why shouldn't people try other places, regardless of their reasons?

Does anyone in that list fit the bill as a Traitor according to the constitution?
Treason shall consist only in levying war against the State, or assisting any State or person or inciting or conspiring with any person to levy war against the State, or attempting by force of arms or other violent means to overthrow the organs of government established by this Constitution, or taking part or being concerned in or inciting or conspiring with any person to make or to take part or be concerned in any such attempt.

This is a very narrow definition of treason restricting it to an act of war or violence.

In the broader sense treason is:

    1.
the offense of acting to overthrow one's government or to harm or kill its sovereign.
    2.
a violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or to one's state.
    3.
the betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery.

which applies to all of the above

You know what, that sort of "we did it to ourselves" thing is a total load of balls.

We didnt all get involved in the madness and buy stupidly big cars and houses etc... I didnt but I am still going to have to pay just as much to bail out your frakin' debts so please dont tell me that the "irish People did it to themselves" because if thats true, then I'm coming round to live in your spare bedroom.

No one considers that about Nama... think of that from my point of view. I stayed through the last recession (called The 80's you might have heard of them) and built several companies and gave people employment. I didnt buy a big car and a stupidly expensive house but now I'm supposed to stay and do it again??

Fool me once, as Mr Bush almost managed to say.
