I'm a boring fence sitter by nature
OK, time to put this one to bed. The AH mods, like all mods, are responsible for forum policy, and they've stated repeatedly that there won't be an off-topic thread in AH as it would be detrimental to the forum. This is a request for a new thread, not a new forum, so there is no need for admin involvement in the decision-making process. The admins trust the mods' judgement, it's why they were made mods in the first place. This is what they've collectively decided is best for the forum and we support their decision.

I would ask that people do have the good grace to accept the decision and not start new threads about either reopening the debate or this post. Similarly PMing the admins, AH mods, etc., won't result in a reversal of the decision.
