09.46 The emission of ash from Iceland's erupting Eyjafjjoell volcano has fallen to 'insignificant' levels, one of the country's leading seismologists said.

Icelandic volcano continues to quieten down

    Posted on 21 April 2010.

Activity at South Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano last night is described as ‘gentle’ and the current force of the eruption is barely 20 percent of its peak. All indications suggest that the volcano is only now erupting from one of its three craters.

Visir.is reports that some ash has still been falling near the glacier, but that it is in vastly reduced quantities. Earth scientists are careful not to call the end of the eruption too early, however – and all are currently saying it could intensify again.

    Hello folks,

I saw an aeroplane flying over Tipperary town at exactly 10pm tonight. The news reports say Aer lingus and Ryanair have cancelled schedules until tomorrow at least. I reckon this plane was flying from Shannon to Dublin. Test flight maybe?

I think Ryanair were taking up a few test flights alright

Plume is fairly low, looks even lower than yesterday but the column is wider so it looks like its erupting from more than one vent at the moment.

Tis allot lower alright. But compared to this morning 8am, its a bit more active. Have we seen the last of the major action, I wouldnt like to bet my house on it.

Very possible it will kick off again sometime in the next few weeks/months. When it last erupted in 1821 it was active for a few days then calmed down until June on 1822 when it started to get more violent again.

How have they decided it's safe to fly over Ireland now??

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/aviation/vaac/data/VAG_1271827786.png

There are still higer concentrations of ash over Ireland by that chart so what is the reasoning behind deciding that it's safe to fly through it?

I can't get over why there isn't more astonishment about this.

They basically increased what they deemed the tolerance levels of ash for aircraft engines after considerable political and commercial pressure.

    They changed the goal posts.

    I'm astonished !

There were no goal posts, they've only put them up :pac:

The VAAC forecast charts even indicate that most of europe must be scarcely over the standard threshold for ash concentration. In the case of Ireland, we remain under the zone marked by a red line for the duration of the forecasts! Ireland and Scotland are currently the nearest countries downstream of the volcano.

So how can they reconcile the forecast with this chart?: https://www.cfmu.eurocontrol.int/PUBPORTAL/gateway/spec/PORTAL.14.0.0.P.254.53/_res/100421_Valid1200_Air_Ash_Concentration_Chart_with_buffer.pdf

There are a couple of flights after going overhead slightly north of London, heading west. It was funny to see people in the street looking up and pointing at planes going over...

I'll admit, I did it as well! Saw a plane going overhead and just stopped and stared at it!

An Post took my air mail parcel for Canada no problem, they say things are getting back to normal, thankfully.

What is the volcano activity now, please? Nothing would surprise.

    Little changes - 21 April 2010 10:00

Little changes since yesterday. The plume rises up to ca 2 km hight above the volcano but up to ca 5 km south of Iceland.

The volcanic tremor has slightly decreased since yesterday.

My gut feeling is that she will not stop yet. That we will have a lull while the wind favours us.

Rumors going around twitter that a 747 was diverted to land at Ostend due to engine damage/failure from ash. Only rumors so far though.
