Airsoft guns shoot plastic BBs and in Ireland are restricted to 328 fps using .20 gram BBs (1 joule).

Pellet guns, which are used for small game and vermin, shoot lead/metallic rounds from anywhere between 800-1500 fps. These are considered firearms in Ireland and you a required to carry a license for them.

Airsoft seems to have gained a bad reputation because of kids shooting postmen with pellet guns, not airsoft guns. Unfortunately the general public seems to have the same difficulty with distinguishing between the two.

its not really. i did not believe question was taboo. i distinguish between animals and vermin. there is a difference between shooting a rat and a cat. i have a shotgun and can legally shoot crows with it. i need to pay a licence for it and as far as I know air soft guns are licence free.

i notice the air soft guns in the republic are more lifelike than in NI where they are red and black.

looking at some of the weapons i could well imagine someone trying to do just that and to the untrained eye they would not be able to tell the difference.

A slingshot is able to empart significantly more power then an airsoft gun.

"Vermin: small animals and insects that can be harmful and which are difficult to control when they appear in large numbers"

Vermin are small animals. The charter clearly states that you can't discuss shooting them. Who's ignorant?

presumably if you have to wear eye protection they can do some harm?

They shouldnt be fired at any living thing outside a skirmish field where the people have agreed to the risks etc. End of.

Mate, your posting in a forum of a sport that has a problem with the average person viewing the sport in a skewed way and incorrect light.

Shooting vermin is generally deemed to be a cruel way to deal with them, both unsavory and generally not something civilized society deems socially acceptable.

In the light that people who care about airsoft want very much for its perception from joe soap to improve and been seen for what it is ..... genuine airsofters dont and wont like being associated with activities such as shooting rats and mice as this could potentially harm the correct image that we would like to portray. (a safe , active, team and personal building sport)

Perhaps a wrist slingshot as suggested would be more appropriate for your needs.

If you had of read the Charter then you would have had your answer.

A kick in the nuts won't kill you but like a shot in the eye, it's not an enjoyable experience.

Firstly, no, airsoft guns are not good for vermin.

Secondly, this is kind of like going onto a hurling forum and asking if hurls are any good for beating small mammals to death.

Your definition left something out, so I just had to edit it a bit
