UK airspace to start reopening on Tuesday

(Reuters) - British airspace will start to reopen to flights from 0600 GMT on Tuesday after levels of volcanic ash from Iceland declined, UK air traffic controllers said on Monday.

The volcanic eruption in southern Iceland has reduced and is not emitting ash to altitudes that would affect Britain, National Air Traffic Services (NATS), which controls UK airspace, said in a statement.

Airspace in Scotland and northern England will open first and restrictions in the rest of England and Wales may be lifted later on Tuesday, the national air traffic control body said.

Excellent, my flight to Heathrow is at 18:05 so looking good.....ish! And with pretty much all of Europe clear above 20,000ft it should be ok for the onward to Dubai. :D

That's all assuming Enya doesn't throw another fit in the meantime.

    From BBC

1623 The Met office has warned that the volcano's activity has started to increase.

A Met spokesman told the BBC that whereas eruptions had subsided this morning to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, they had increased within the past two hours back to a height of 10,000 ft.

Although this is not back to the initial maximum height of 30,000 ft, the spokesman said the unpredictable nature of the volcano's activity meant that there was still cause for concern.

    From rte live disaster thing

17:07 A statement on the Irish Aviation Authority's website says that the current meeting of EU transport ministers is expected to approve an interim, European-wide response to the airspace restrictions arising from the volcanic ash cloud.

The response will ease restrictions, and this will facilitate the commencement of limited operations from 5am tomorrow, based on ash proliferation assessments.
IAA expects to reinstate some air traffic services on a phased basis from this time. It stressed that this is not a return to full service.

Hard to find a working live stream of Eyjafjallajökull at the moment, but the tremors are still pretty strong in the vicinity & here is a picture of it about an hour ago : http://www.simnet.is/jonfr500/earthquake/vefmyndeyjafjalmulaen.html

    Magma batches ejected
    No lava flow detected yet

    19.4.2010

At 04 o'clock this morning, seismic tremors indicated that lava flow might have begun in Eyjafjallajökull.

At 08:50 the ash cloud reached a hight of 4 km, which is less than in recent days. This would suggest that water inflow at the crater is decreasing and that the ash producing phase of this eruption is giving way to a phase of lava flow.

Two of IMO's specialists flew with the Icelandic Coast Guard this morning (19 April) and observed, at 10:30, magma batches thrown 1.5 - 3 km into the air by explosions in the crater.

Magma batches have have accumulated on the crater's rim. Lumps and batches of magma have also fallen on the ice around the crater and this gives rise to steam plumes.

In spite of the ejected batches of liquid magma, no lava flow from the craters was detected. South of the eruptive site, the ash clouds reached 5-6 km hight.

Note that this camera was aimed at Hekla volcano but now it is aimed at Eyjafjallajokull glacier where the eruption is ongoing. That is what you are looking at.

That's exactly what i had mentioned earlier. In the morning, there was almost nothing today, but it has visibly increased by a great deal in the afternoon.

BNO says Icelandic Met Office say there is no eruption at Hekla. Just some confusion with webcams looking at the plume from Eyjafjallajökull.

Speaking of Eyjafjallajökull, the ash plume has gotten a bit larger it seems in the last hour or so and the colour of the plume has turner much darker:

    Phew!

Apparantly an Icelandic Broadcasting Service camera was pointed at Eyjafjallajökull, but it was labeled Hekla.

Ash plume definitely larger now and darker, nearly up to Saturday levels. Wind direction is pushing this down over us so its premature to think we are out of the woods yet.

People were underestimating nature thinking it was "over" remember this volcano lasted what? 18 months last time! not over yet :(
