Balls to Facebook to be honest.

I'm spastic enough at social interaction with my real acquaintances and friends. I don't need how sh*t I am displayed for the world to see.

All the issues people seem to have with Facebook can be dealth with easily enough.

*Friend requests from arseholes: Reject them.
    *Annoying Status updates: Block them.
*Farmville and other game requests: Block them.
    *Privacy problems: Change privacy settings.
*Losing touch with real friends: Give them a ring, arrange to meet up.

Facebook can be really enjoyable if you use it correctly. Just don't go posting drunken pictures of yourself, or post annoying status updates like "Oh my God, I was soooooo drunk last night!"

I find it can be a great way to communicate humour, and complain about my overdue essays :P

By all means, delete your Facebook if you like, but don't go thinking you're some sort of rebel, shining above us mindless, norm-abiding, internet-controlled sheeple :p

Christ, people will whinge about anything, won't they?

"oh god, I'm too lazy to hit "hide" on that annoying person, let's go and complain!"

"Farmville is like, soooo annoying! But will I block this application? No!"

You're all just looking for reasons to bitch, tbh. So far every single thing people have complained about here is remedied in about 5 seconds. There's absolutely nothing mentioned that is an actual issue.

Ads = AdBlock on FF, AdThwart on GC, whatever blocker on IE
    Farmville/Applications = "Block this application"
Status updates = "Hide" the person
Annoying friend requests = Make your account private so you don't get requests, you choose who to add
Privacy = Adjust your privacy settings

And whoever used that "FACEBOOK IS DISTRACTING!!" excuse? The whole internet's distracting. You must never get anything done.

I would prefer to keep using the account really, its a good way to keep in touch with people you otherwise would have no contact with and would actually like to hear about snippets of their lives...

That being said, I now only really use it for keeping contact with people as I've gotten rid of the games and stupid groups I've no interest in anymore, plus with a good profile privacy, if people want to know more about me then they'll have to know me somehow and not stalk me on it.

    Hi all,

just wondering if you think someone has hacked into your facebook account..is there a way of tracing it? something was posted on my wall and it was via mobile facebook.. and it wasn't me..any ideas?

I would, I hardly use the thing anyway. Girlfriend is obsessed with it, on it 24/7 , has to update her status or the world will end, ends up taking more pics on a night out to put up on facebook she forgets to actually enjoy herself, it's like a virtual ****ing world, it's so full of crap get real friends for gods sake..

I don't know if there's a way to track it, I think you might have to contact facebook about that but I doubt that that sort of information would be given as it might go against their privacy policy. However, I would advise changing you password immediately.

Deactivated my account on Tuesday. Doesn't mean jack ****, if you log in again you basically have your account back. Bit pointless. Fcuk facebook.

I deactivated my account before to get away from a girl I no longer wanted to talk to. I knew if I deleted her as a friend she'd start asking why so it was just easier to delete the whole account and make up an excuse as to why.

A while later though I created a new account under a different email address that she doesn't have :)

To be honest though, Facebook is ok but I wouldn't rule out getting rid of my account again. It's handy though for me at the minute as I've made some new contacts that I have on it so it's a useful way to keep in touch.

    http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/quit-facebook-in-protest/story-e6frfku0-1225873887242
A GROUP protesting Facebook's privacy policies says more than 30,000 people had heeded its call to quit the social networking giant.
"For us it comes down to two things: fair choices and best intentions. In our view, Facebook doesn't do a good job in either department," the organisers, who did not identify themselves, said on their website for yesterday's "Quit Facebook Day".
"Facebook gives you choices about how to manage your data, but they aren't fair choices."
The group said at 9am (AEST) today that 32,749 had dropped out of the Facebook universe.
Facebook.com is visited monthly by 540 million people, or slightly more than 35 per cent of the internet population, according to Google data.
Facebook is overhauling privacy controls in the face of a barrage of criticism that it is betraying the trust which has made it the world's biggest social network.
Facebook redesigned its privacy settings page to provide a single control for content and "significantly reduce" the amount of information that is always visible to everyone.
Facebook also said it is giving users more control over how outside applications or websites access information at the service.
Critics continue to call for Facebook to make all user information private by default and then let people designate what they want to share case-by-case in an "opt-in" model.

Am I alone in wondering what the fuss is all about? The privacy controls are easy to use and the amount of 'information' on there is fairly limited, imo. I don't have my address, phone number or turn-ons listed, so what's the problem?

I block such statuses at the click of a button.

I deleted mine a few weeks ago, and have not looked back. I was fed up with them ****ing with my stuff, and changing the settings of my information without my consent.

I am feeling much better now with a few real friends instead of a load of bored, friend-counting, status-hungry contacts I have no interest in.

I recommend deleting your profiles people, not just deactivating them, and ignore the email bait to get you to log in again. (the delete controls are hidden in the help section)

facebook is just for businesses to target you anyway, and the new features and technology are web-wide, not just in fb.

Thanks to facebook, I know where you are, what you are doing and how to sell you things you'll never need.

    Was reading that earlier.

Someone should really create a Facebook group for that group. Think of the ironing! :pac:

Only if you decide to post such information. The information available is ultimately the responsibility of the person to whom it refers, imo.

I find it funny that the group thinks it had a part to play in the people quitting FB. They'll solve African debt next.

Fook it. I deleted it only to be dragged back in by a mass of friends etc etc.

If I wanted to I could wihtout issue delete all user names on the sites I use including boards.

Effort of it all and anyways I only check facebook every now and then while I spent time on this mostly or else have it running in the backround while I surf other sites.

I deactivated mine, Hate facebook to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,160 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

If you use it properly to meet your needs then I don't see what there is to hate.

You can keep in touch with friends (you don't have to add the randomers believe it or not) easy and you only have to disclose the information you want to disclose.

Too many drama queens giving out about it imo.

Deactivated my account there. Whatever people say, it is addictive for the majority of young people and that includes myself, even if I do despise the majority of the content on it. Going to take a break for a month and do some things with my life that are long overdue and that facebook will only interfere with in a far from positive way. It felt great deactivating it by the way!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

Well I'm a little confused. Delete my Facebook under the same circumstances as you? Well I am under the same circumstances as you and I haven't. But if the right circumstances came up, yea, I would easily delete my account. Means nothing really...

Nope, I spend hours on it at a time when I could/should be at the gym or studying etc. As do a lot of people I know. Very sad but at least I'm doing something about it eh;)

But what do you be doing? Snooping?

I can understand talkin to your mates and that but what else leads to the addiction? Please don't say Farmville.
