no as it is a good way to satisfy curiosity about someone else and i avoid joining all those pointless groups and especially the games such as farmville.

No, I've encountered tonnes of hot girls on facebook, even if they don't know it yet.

The best solution I've found is to use a program like Pidgin which integrates nicely into the im side of things then you have all the benefit of your frends being able to contact you, and vice versa, without the mindless banality of the status updates slowly melting your mind. I can't remember the last time I've actually loaded up my facebook page.

I have friends and family living in different parts of the world so no, I wont be deleting it.

On another note, I'm going to stop receiving mail. I know that I need it for receiving important letters etc. but I also recieve junk mail as well which annoys me. I know I could just send this junk mail back and say no more but it seems easier just to refuse mail altogether.

I don't think you can really compare facebook to your everyday mail. It's more than that. It's the tagging of photos, the mindless habit of getting addicted to games and some of your friends or friends of friends being able to snoop around your profile and look at photos and what you're doing. I also wanted to delete it 'cause I want to experience reality again instead of the constant urge to record your life on facebook. And I find it hard to imagine how you could receive really important 'mail' through facebook; we have this thing that works through the internet called 'e-mail' which you could use for that. Facebook is hardly as vital as mail or e-mail.

It's the tagging of photos - untag them and request that you're friends don't tag you

the mindless habit of getting addicted to games - that's personal preference, I block all those games

some of your friends or friends of friends being able to snoop around your profile and look at photos and what you're doing - only if you share such information

I still don't think you can compare facebook to your everyday mail or e-mail. Facebook, for most people anyway, is just a silly past-time.

Of course I can. FB is a wonderful tool if used correctly. The points you've made can be remedied if you really wanted to.

Oh Good God, anybody else sick of Facebook will cause you syphilis type threads?

I deleted mine because there are paedophiles on there, you know.

I'm thinking of deleting mine because I don't want people seeing photos of myself that I've put up.

Well I still find that there are far too many distractions on facebook. Maybe you might be able to resist the other stuff they have on that site but a lot of people can't, why would you think that they have it there if they thought other people weren't going to use it. I had to say no, I'm sticking with e-mail, web-texts/texts and calls for communication.

You can block those games and never see them on your profile again. It's been close to a year since I had any Farmville or Mafia Wars requests.

Today I was faced with a dilemma. To delete my facebook account or not to delete my facebook account. I hated the lack of privacy, the almost mindless status updates from friends and some people who I hadn't even met before; giving me a glimpse into their lives. I was compelled after a while to adhere to the mindless norms of the facebook community and update my status with pointless statements, play farmville, and so on and so forth.

Then one day, today, I said to myself, "NO!! I shall not conform any longer!!!". So I went and deactivated my account. Then, I thought, why not delete my bebo and myspace account too. So I did. And people, it felt good, really good! From now on if people ask me if I'm on Facebook, I'll just say; "No, call me or text me instead".

So would you do the same; delete your Facebook account, or other social network accounts you have?

You are indeed brave to be facing you to this colossal dilemma, a cross-roads in your life of sorts. A crucial turning point that cannot be undone.
God love you and the generations ahead who will have to face up to your thankless, self -sacrificial task. A Hero.

Yes, my wording was quite dramatic.

Imagine what type of a hell hole boards.ie would be if they started introducing games, more detailed profiles where not only could you comment on a persons profile but you could also make status updates which could be view by everyone. Also, more public photo albums, and annoying adverts covering the page. What would you think of that?

It would be a huge detriment to my life, taking those 5 seconds to block such applications.

Facebook tosh, MSN is good enough for me, just a pity almost everyone I know has left MSN for the muck that is Facebook. Still I refuse to use it of any social network site created by the interweb sheeple.

Facebook is just for people who need to feel popular. If you just want to contact peeps on the otherside of the planet there are other programs out there for the past 15 years that do just as good a job without all the social I'm more popular than you competition sh!te.

I just de-activated my FB page too. Before I was on FB I thought it was a waste of time and couldn't understand what people were banging on about. I started a page and it was handy enough, I got top chat with people I hadn't seen in a while and see what they have been up to for the last few years. After about 6 months of it i'm back to the same opinion I had before hand. I don't want to know about Farmville, I couldn't care less if someone is watching a movie tonight etc.

I also predict that Facebook with be gone in about two years. Then Google Buzz with be all the buzz, and it will be even worse than bebo, twitter, myspace and facebook combined!

As mentioned before, if you're repeately seeing stuff you don't want to see, you can hide it.

I'm not on Facebook of my own free will.

And no I wouldn't join just to complain that I'm not the sexy Roma he invented.

Seeing as it originated from a game site, slightly different dynamic at play there.

You have pm's and visitor messages if you so wish. You can upload photos and there is a tweet.ie and social.ie.

You'll just get dragged into it anyway, it's a vicious cycle. Your friends will send you requests, you'll ignore them at first but then you might try it out. Then you'll get hooked. I heard one girl at college say out load once "I have to get onto facebook so I can harvest my strawberries".

I'm aware that you can swith off or hide those messages, but other than PM and photo upload all people do on FB is use apps and update their status.
I can get messages and photos on e-mail so as far as I can see FB has nothing new to offer that my phone or email acc does already.

Indeed, a sense of melo-drama should accompany all FB exits- a Polish state funeral, an Internet folding of flags to be presented to your grieving widow/boyfriend ;)
