Anyone attempting to collect the many Guinness 250th Anniversary Beermats, which feature pubs around Ireland? I believe there's over fifty, but haven't been able to find out all of the pubs....

Here's a lovely one of the Long Hall for example, the original paintings are super and I'd love to pick up as many as these beermats as possible while there still around!

    Long+Hall+beermatlo.jpg

Here's a list of pubs that I'm aware have been used in the collection.... (I have most of the Dublin ones, but none of the other counties). If ther are any others out there I don't mention below, please let me know!!!

And if anyone wants to to swap Dublin ones for other pubs around Ireland, I'd be delighted to help! :D

Might be worth a shot contacting Guinness marketing dept directly and asking for some to be sent to you, or a list of which pubs are in the set.

Thanks for advice, I did email guinness but no reply yet, found 2 more in Limerick Nancy Blake's and Flannery's, and its the Errigle Inn in Belfast.

If ye know the names of the 9 Galway ones Archy1 please let me know!

I wonder how Guinness chose which pubs to feature, because some great ones have been left out...Ryan's on Parkgate St. or the Cobblestone, not to mention many others around Ireland, while there's a few pubs featured which I'd never want to set foot-in, let alone have a pint in... but sure diageo didn't do it for posterity reasons...

I'm collecting a set of these and was wondering if anyone around here is interested in swapping some with me to complete our collections.

The one's for Dublin I'm looking for are

    The Long Hall
    Paddy Cullens
    The Auld Dubliner
    The Temple Bar
    Oliver St. John Gogarty
    Grogans
    Kiely's of Donnybrook

I've got the rest of the Dublin ones, multiples of in some cases.
I will also swap for the beermats outside Dublin also.

There is another one not on your list. Gravediggers (Kavanaghs) in Glasnevin, Dublin had them as well so I guess that make 52 in all. I managed to get one from the Gravediggers in good condition a couple of days ago but they are running out fast. (So few actually that I was lucky to get one in good nick at all).

Have a man in Galway doing a bit of digging now but the longer I leave it the less chance there is I reckon. Only 23 out of 52 so far and 20 of them are Dublin with 3 from Cork. :(

Dublin ones missing - Brogans, Palace Bar, Madigans, Bellamys, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Crowes, The Long Hall.

Have spares of Paddy Cullens, Nearys, Grogans, Kehoes, Horse Show House, Mary Macs, O'Neills and Kielys

I'm still trying to get the one from Derry and three from Belfast 'The Duke of York 'The Hollow', and 'The Canal Court Hotel' to finish my collection!! I have spares of most of the others and would love to swap a number of these for the ones I need!! PM me if you can help! Also if anyone wants to see a photo of the ones i have above (except the four I havent got) id be happy to help!

In relation to the Gravediggers beermat, I haven't seen this one but have discovered other pubs that have been pictured as 250th anniversary Guinness beermats. Howvever, these ones don't look like the watercolour pubs listed in the collection listed above. See this link to see what I'm talking about!!

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Goat-Bank-Guinness-250-Beer-Mats-Sous-Bocks-Bierdeckel_W0QQitemZ260571600979QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Collectables_Breweriana_SM?hash=item3cab471853

Anyone know about these type of beermats? How many there are etc?

Anyone have any idea where the Hollow is, Belfast? or is it in Enniskillen?

Anyway when you have these beermats stuck up on a wall together there very impressive!

    Happy collecting!

I'm looking for The Temple Bar beermat so if anyone has a spare I could swap it with them for one or a few of the Dublin ones they're missing.

The Gravediggers is almost an exact match of other beermats (see attachment).

I was there last weekend and noticed during my second pint that the pub has the drip mat that is common to the pubs with these beermats. I did a quick recon and noticed one beermat in a corner. There are very few left in this pub and they are not in great condition - better have a look in the lounge rather than the bar. I was talking with the barmaid and she said that they are not officially apart from the 250 Anniversary - hence the 250 missing from the beermats. She said it was a gift from Guinness after they had already issued the 27 since the Gravediggers sells more Guinness per square metre than any other pub.

I had thought that this list was 55 pubs instead of 57 - in fact I've been to the 55 in the past 4 weeks, so what a pain to see there are more!

I'm a bit suspicious of these extra two. The Dublin Civic Trust on 4 Castle St, Dublin have all 55 framed. Also, the Garrick in Belfast have a set of the 10 Ulster pubs framed - the 9 Belfast pubs plus Peader's in Derry.

The Canal Court Hotel is most likely that in Newry, not Belfast - a harge and modern hotel. Its opposite the bus station. Never heard of the Hollow.

Damn, I'm sorry I didn't get more now, especially when helpful barstaff would be offering me a bundle, but I never thought of swapping them and didn't want to be greedy!

    I have spares of:
    - Belfast: The Errigal, The Garrick, The Kitchen Bar, The Botanic Inn
    - Cork: Canty's
    - Derry: Peader's
    - Dublin: O'Donoghues (used), The Palace, Grogan's, Kehoe's, Toner's, The Stag's Head, McDaid's, The Gravediggers (used), Brogans
    - Limerick: Nancy Blakes, Flannery's
    - Galway: The Dail Bar, Garavan's, Taaffes

I'm looking for these as a priority:
    - Galway: Murphy's
    - Cork: The Ovens Bar

Please PM me if you fancy a swap. Or if you're in Galway or Cork, drop in. The bars seem to get in fresh supplies or find more - for example it took two visits to Galway between myself and a friend to get the 9 out of 10 that I have.

    Thanks for the info Zapb,

Probably makes the gravediggers beermat a bit more special to have!!!
and is now the 28th Dublin one!

I've only included the Hollow and the Canal Court hotel as part of the collection after an email from guinness, I'm not sure if there email is 100% correct, as ive never seen pictures/beermats for these two pubs, might ring the pubs later and find out!

I had emailed the Hollow in Enniskillen and found out the pub isnt part of the collection. I havent heard of any other pubs called the Hollow up north!

I have seen 56 beermats now, with the 56th Gravediggers being the last one!

Just need to get the gravediggers one to finish my collection and frame them on a wall, think the last gravediggers one might ruin the perfect rectagle shape I was hoping for! :D

    Kind Regards
    Killian

On thinking about it, the Hollow is most probably Blakes of Enniskillen - also known as Blakes of the Hollow. Its a very nice pub which is often features on postcards of typical pubs in Ireland.

I've never been so its a good excuse to use the bank holiday weekend - I will pay a visit there tomorrow and see if they have them. I may just swing by Newry and see if they have any too - I will get spares this time.

Went to both Blakes of the Hollow in Enniskillen and the Canal Court Hotel in Newry last Easter weekend.

Talked to the barman in Blakes who said that although they did have these beermats, they went pretty quickly. He had a good look around to see if he had any lying about but wasn't able to get me a one. It wasn't a truly wasted trip though as its a fantastic Victorian bar - certainly worth a visit and a good choice to be commemorated by these beermats (unlike some!).

Went also to Canal Court Hotel the same day - unfortunately the evening was jammed - seemed to be a whole host of events on. There wasn't a single beermat out (had a good look) and the bar staff looked too busy to be hassling them regarding beermats. Its a big place.

Killian - when you contacted Guinness, did they mention any other way of gettng these? Wonder who printed them...... Of course that would be cheating a bit.

I am really curious about how they were chosen - the fact that one of the pubs in Cork has already closed down since they were issued (and from te look of the outisde, no loss really) doesn't say much for the guy who chose them.

Now only looking for The Ovens Bar in Cork to complete - anyone got this to trade - see earlier post for my list of spares.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 14 zapb

One of the really cool things I liked when I saw the beermats from cities apart from Dublin was the city-specific side of the beermat - Dublin has the GPO, Belfast: City Hall, Galway: Eyre Square.

It was a real disappointment then to see that Limerick does not have a city specific side - having only Cork's Patrick Street as its city image. Stranger was Derry having Dublin's GPO. What a shame not to feature the walls of Derry or King John's Castle in Limerick.

I thought it was a bit of a shabbly cost saving approach, but on further research actually it made no sense as there are post card equivalents of these beermats on sale on eBay which feature some of the pubs of the collection and also a much wider selection of city-specific imagines from Dublin to Waterford, Limerick (Thomond Park) to Galway.

Dublin has an extra imagine, with the Luas in front of Stephen's Green featured.

    See here:

By the way - the pub is actually called the Duke of York.

Morton's Red Hand is a advertisement for a now extinct beer brand. Easy to make this mistake as the advertising is very prominent over the bar - and is actually probably a cooler name than the Duke of York.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭mangledbadgers

    Duke of York it is!

Yeh the backs of Peader's and the two Limericks ones are funny,

Anyone have a spare of McHugh's from Belfast?????

Think that's the last one I need to complete the collection!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭mangledbadgers

I visted the Dublin Civic Trust today, after Zapb's post! They were given a framed collection of the beermats from Guinness for their exhibition, and all 55 beermats are featured as well as the 4 different cityscapes! The civic trust building also houses the remains of the facade of the Irish House!

Howvever their collection does not include the Gravediggers beermat!

I took a photo, but the quality isn't the best!

    First photo close up ;
The Mutton Lane Inn, The Palace, Peader O Donnells,
John Hewitt, Tig Coili, Mary Mac's
    Freeney's, McDaids, Garavans
Oven's Tavern, The Dail Bar, Bellamys
    The Errigle Inn, Kehoes, O'Donoghues

    Second photo close up;
Seagan ua Neactain, Temple Bar, O'Connells, Duke of York
Murphy's, Garvey's, The Garrick, The Swan
The Duke, Horse Show House, Taffes, Morrisons
The Oval, Thisty Scholar, Flannerys, The Kitchen Bar
Auld Dubliner, Kielys, Sonnys, Crown Bar

    Third photo close up;
Neary's, Long Hall, Brazen Head, Botanic Inn
    Brogans, Grogans, Gogarty's, Crowes
Doheny & Nesbitts, Mulligans, Paddy Cullens, An Spailpin Fanach
    Canty's, Stag's Head, Nancy Blakes, O'Neills
    McHugh's, Toners, Church, Madigans

There we go, for anyone who need's to put a name to a face!

If anyone knows of any others than these 55 and Gravediggers, do tell!

Im still on the hunt for McHughs so please PM me if you have spare!
    ;)

My final post on this - finally finished this collection - all 56 - I got most of them going to the bars themselves, but also used eBay and exchanged beermats with posters here on this forum to fill in the gaps in the collection.

Good luck to anyone starting - there are less and less of these beermats in the pubs in question - just taking a guess I'd say you'd be lucky in about half the pubs now - so I think anyone starting now will have to look at eBay.

Here are close-up photos showing the full collection as well as various city collections:
