Squeeky belt problem - 1.9TDI VAG Engine

    Hi

I’m having a problem with a belt that squeaks after first start up every morning. The car is a seat Toledo 1.9 tdi with engine code AHF or ASW. The engine is similar to the 1.9tdi Octavia and A3.

It must be a belt problem because when I get someone else to start it and I listen in the engine bay I can hear initially what sounds like an elephant trumpeting. It’s like the alternator pulley momentary seizes and lets the belt rub around it instead of turning it. Then after that sound has happened you can hear the belt rubbing the alternator pulley as if it had a bulge in it. It’s not a constant rubbing but increases or decreases as the engine revs up or down. When you let it run for about 5 minutes the sound goes away and you wont here it again until the next cold start.

I’ve taken the belt off and replaced it with a new one but the same sound is still there. Could there be a fault with the belt tensioner? I’ve also replaced the alternator. The old one had a clutch that was worn out and on its last legs and vie replaced it with a clutch less one since they are more reliable but there has been no improvement.

The only part left to change is the alternator belt tensioner and maybe an idler if there is one, I can’t remember. Other than that it sounds like a timing belt issue but that was only changed when I bought the car. The sound was there before and after changing the timing belt. It might be a water pump or steering pump issue as well I guess.

Has anyone else a similar problem? Any ideas what I should do next?

And why do you think the alternator had a clutch pulley to begin with??;)

the replacement alternator i bought was from the same model car with the same engine code. they are two different manufacturers though. the one i took out was a bosch make, cant remember the one i put in. either way the same sound happens now after replacing the alternator than with the old one. I'm not even sure now that the alternater is the issue. only reason i changed the alternator was because I had to change the brushes twice in the space of a year because the brass rings were worn.

The clutch pulley is most likely the problem, they can fail by locking up and causing the belt noise, by putting a solid pulley on you have not fixed the problem, this is a common problem pulleys are approx €90 at VW.
This will eventually cause the aux belt tensioner to fail due to vibration if not adressed.

Kinda similar, but my 2.0 TDI sounds like something is skipping/rattling intermittently when it's idling. No adverse effects on performance and no warning lights.. hard to describe (wish you could attach mp3s to this)

    Any ideas?
