Pennys 'paedo' padded bras

Seen yesterday's Irish Sun Headline which was "Pennys Selling Sicko Paedo Bras".

Yesterdays Primark Front Page - Irish Sun not online.

It went on to sensationalize the story and I thought no more of it.

Now today it would seem that Pennys / Primark have caved and pulled the line in these clothes for kids.

HIGH Street chain Primark have pulled padded bikinis aimed at seven-year-olds from their shelves after a Sun investigation - but many stores continue to sell padded bras and other provocative kids' clothes.

Products like these are part of a worrying trend, according to a leading psychologist who wrote a recent Home Office report on the sexualisation of children:

IT is shocking to think how many people would have been involved to get these products on the market. And how desensitised they must have been not to consider their impact.

In the past I found bibs and T-shirts in online stores with sexual slogans on them such as "All daddy wanted was a b*** j**".

There is make-up for children and dolls dressed in six-inch heels and fish nets - and stationery with a global porn brand stamped on it.

The notion of little girls enjoying dress-up is nothing new. What is concerning is that many of the choices now available encourage them to engage and experiment with themes they may not be developmentally ready to engage with.

By over-emphasising their sexuality through fashion it may make it harder for girls to value themselves for other aspects of their identity.

In their report on the sexualisation of girls, the American Pychological Association say that when girls are dressed in miniature versions of adult clothes, there is the danger people will project adult motives and responsibility on to them.

And this in turn may have the impact of normalising the sexual abuse of children.

Sexual curiosity is a normal feature of childhood. Girls have stuffed tissues in their bras to make their chests bigger for decades.

But there is a big difference between that and being sold ways to promote a sexuality they do not have.

It's time we worked together with retailers. Organisations such as the NSPCC and academics working in this area need to advise retailers on what is right and wrong (and why) for children to recover from the situation we are currently faced with.

There is preliminary evidence to suggest a clear connection between STIs, violence in teenage relationships and eating disorders and the sexualisation of our children And what is happening in retail is just part of the bigger picture.

There seems to be a general acceptance that children do not need to be protected from sexual issues at an early age, when clearly they do.
    Source

I don't have kids, but this all seems to be over the top.

I mean, it would seem to be that paedos sexually attracted to prepubescent kids, so why would dressing them as adults interest them.

If anything, would this not make them less child like and so make them less interested?

I agree that some of the tops I have seen with slogans are over the top but scantly clad is just closer to naked and nakedness should not (although it is) be inherently associated with sexuality.

What's your opinions on these clothes for kids?

Padded bras are better actually cos you can't see the nips on a cold day

I had one when I was 12, they felt more supportive.

Whoever said that would look sexy on a kid, they are the ones with a problem.

Capitalism/consumerism thrives on "wants". Teens spend alot of money. It makes sense for capitalists artificially increase the teen phase, just like they advertise Xmas before Halloween is even over. They taint everything.

Wasn't this Wednesday's news? Good to see Primark act accordingly.

Yeah, maybe the Sun should target those sickos who sell boxes of tissues next.

I fear that answering that honestly would lead to my arrest. :pac:

In all seriousness though, these clothes shouldnt be in the shops, not because of the so-called 'paedo' aspect, but just in general. Its getting ridiculous making kids as young as 7 worry about their self image - I thought we were trying to stop all that. 7 years olds should be running around enjoying themselves, not getting fake-tanned up to the nines and wearing this crap.

Having said that, the sun's headline is ridiculous.

Have to say, I am too.

I think it's sick to have "sexy" satin lingerie for kids. I think it's sick to have Playboy bras and knickers for pre teens. Bikinis for 3 years olds WTF?

Seriously, STOP sexing kids up. It's fúcked up.

    How is a bikini sexual?

Am I missing something or would paedos not prefer the kids to have smaller chests as that's what they are attracted to?

Yes - And you can also include supermarkets who sell alphabet soup.

Only last week I discovered that my 5 year old nephew had spelt the words
"Wánk", "Shít", "Fúck" using his alphabet soup.

I don't know what these retailers are thinking of - these products should be banned immediately......:p

Well it depends on what the sick fúck is into. Some are into babies, some are into toddlers some are into "not quite legal".

Depends on the exact type of nut job you're dealing with tbh :)

Hold on regardless of what you say. I never look at a child and think mad things. My other half looked at her sister once and said she needs a bra so really does noticeing mean your sick. No.

I could not care really and they are only 3 euro.....

Dont buy them if you care.

I love the fact that they've sensationalised everything to the point that they now need to distinguish 'sicko' paedos from normal ones.

Next you'll be saying that pole dancing isn't sexual. It's just a harmless form of exercise. If people see something sexual in it that's their problem.

Nope, bang on as far as I am concerned.

And anytime I have ever read of an abused child, or a kidnapped one, I have never heard a report like: "It was our fault, we let her out with a kiss me quick t-shirt.."

I think clothes have zero to do with it.

When I was young all my girlfirends dressed as the Mini-Pops at birthday parties, this is not new.

Shirley Temple in War Babies is hilarious.

Priests have been abusing kids all these years and clothes have hardly been to blame.

I highly doubt the sick bastards are attracted to padded tops. Ban swimwear now because it might look sexy on a child?

its not the paedos i'm worried about tbh.

its the fact that kids are becoming sexual too young. i don't want my daughter to have to worry about that stuff for as long as possible :)

I think you missed my point. You don't know what they are attracted to. They might be attracted to young teens that are just starting to develop.

I can't understand why anyone would anyone think it's a good idea for a 10 year old to wear a badded bra which makes their boobs look bigger? makes no sense.
Ban swimwear now because it might look sexy on a child?

That's the same as saying ban underwear or pyjamas because they make stuff that looks like it's for adults.

    You're just being silly.

Ok I may come under fire for this, but here is my opinion regardless, do you know who is to blame for this................. the mums. I am sorry but a 2-3 year old girl is not capible of the thought pattern necessary to say to themselves "I LOVE that bikini and I have to have it!!!!" It is mum who picks it up and thinks "Hmmm (enter name) will look so cute in this!"

These bikinis wwere not available in Irish stores according to RTE news, but I still feel they are wrong. And it is the likes of Bratz and other toys and role models to young girls that are to blame, the clothing companies are a buiness and only want to sell what is profitable, so they are only selling what is wanted, I think a boycott of inappropriate items ONLY is the way to get them off the shelves! I would not boycott the whole store just the items of clothing that look to adult for young children.

I was walking through Dunnes in the Stephens Green Shopping Centre with my toddler son and his father and his father turned around to me and said thank god we didnt have a girl, they all seem to have nothing but trampy clothes (we were walking out through the childrens clothes section).

When I was a 6 year old I adored my Jeans, "Rock Roads" and a jumper, to this day my favourite clothes are Jeans and Hoodie. What you put a child in when they are 5 is what they will see as acceptable for a lot of their lives!!!
