Now with due respect you have effectivly added to the stigma women suffer without realising it...and you have shattered the posters illusion

    Why?

For example.... A man never discusses brad pitts waist size or tom cruises height.(even though he is small)....why? Yes a man sees that women see them good looking but a man says right I need to get fit... but he does not say I need 32 waist or a 36" waist because we know that arnie's waist is hugh compared to tom cruise but they both have attributes that make them apealing to men.

where as a women equates another women as being goodlooking because of the attributes that we are discussing... For example I must be a size zero... My otherhalf was less than a size zero when i met her. she is more now but is no less apealing...

    ...ummm....sorry!

Its women who read these magazines and the majority of skinny pressure is derived from women....men do not like skinny. If you want a girl with a figure with an 11 year old boy...well your probably a priest.

You don't want your mickey rattling off her pelvis and ribs at the same time. You need Padding for your pudding

In fairness, it were me that mentioned my size and that of Marilyn Monroe. ibarelycare was just pointing out the myth that surrounds Ms Monroe's size because I had used her as an example.

I get your point on the rest though. It's a totally different world for men with this issue. But they have their fair share to deal with too - thinning hair, baldness, physique etc etc.

Already in her? Double team scenario?

The actual reasons for creation of size 0 were size inflation (e.g. a size 9 dress being labelled as a 7) and immigration from Asia (Asian women have smaller frames)

I would defo agree. Because I am one of those guys who does like thinner women(not 14 year old boy hips though :D) and Im quite a rarity. You wouldnt think it by the women that men may reference as their ideal, but its true for the most part. They may mention some skinny starlet, but in the flesh would probably go no way, other than to boast they were with her.

EG I would not find Nigella lawson attractive. Her face, yes, she is gorgeous. Her body no. TBH I would find her body unattractive. just way too much of a good thing. Dont like big bewbs either. the majority of men reading this now think Im in need of a guide dog and having my head read. Hell even some gay fellas fancy Nigella :D

Maybe its cos I myself look like a reject from a trocaire box that water finds its own level, but as I say I am unusual. The men who like a size 8 are much rarer than the men who like a size 14. And actually rarer IME than men who like a size 20.

With size I think most men only get freaked by change in size if they get freaked at all. Much much less than women do.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

what about gay designers that would tend to find boyish frames more attractive?
another argument i heard is the size 0 models just use less material. cheap baxtards!

the "skinny pressure" may be mostly derived from women, but there are really two sides to it - fashion and sex.
on the fashion end, it stems from the major fashion houses, and often it IS men who insist on using ridiculously thin models.but yeah, it's mostly women who eat it up.
then you have the sex aspect and you've also got your FHM/ Megan Fox/Jessica Alba types that men go on about how hot they are, so women feel pressure to be sexy for men as well - and although they might not be dramatically skinny like size zero models, having a flat stomach and just the right amount of curves in just the right places is just as unrealistic for most of us.

on the bright side, awareness is growing big time, and hopefully young girls growing up realise just how much photoshopping goes on.

also, even though i'm huuugely opposed to how the media only presents one beauty ideal [thin], i hate when it generates this kind of backlash of "ugh she's too skinny to ****, it's disgusting" etc. people come in all shapes and sizes, some people are just genetically thinner, and others have eating disorders. body snarking at someone for being too thin is just as bad as doing the same for someone you deem overweight.

in saying that, i know this is AH.... so whatever. carry on!

    Just get out!

    *cries into bowl of ice-cream*

    :pac:

Nothing wrong with women who are naturally slender, but if it's the case that they're starving themselves and excessively dieting to be as small as possible, then it is a problem.

I feel sorry for women who are genetically thin and have to deal with constant abuse about having an eating disorder or being ill, tbh it's just as offensive and cruel as poking fun at someone who's larger.

I was in the supermarket and was standing beside two girls, one going on and on about her she had ordered an outfit from the States for a wedding she was going to - the outfit being a size 0. Her friend started talking about how she feels so fat compared to her freakishly thin friend. Both of these women were very, and I mean sickly, thin. I was shocked to think this is what women today are striving for.

I am always concerned about the health side if things. Before I saw the women in the supermarket I hadn't really visualised just how small size 0 is. These women can't be having periods or be able to get pregnant at that size, or able to function comfortably in everyday life! Surely, staving oneself to fit into a size of clothing has many long term effects (joint and bone issues come to mind) and if you are that size you must feel like sh!t all the time. And to think, normal women are made to think they are fat - very sickening.

I say, get a chinese or a few burgers girls!

The first photo looks airbrushed to an inch of it's life. She looks like a mannequin... This presents a whole other issue.. Normal girls don't and can't look like that - we don't have 'airbrush' in our make up.:)

Her body is lovely though but I suspect an inch or two may have been photoshopped from her torso....

You're supposed to be looking at the clothes. That's the purpose of a fashion model. They're glorified walking mannequins.

Well if that's the case, then why aren't bigger women selected more often than thinner one's to be fashion models?

And if the bigger girls aren't selected, why are the thinner ones? Because that's what sells. Why does it sell? Because it's perceived to look better. So therefore, the bigger girl feels inferior.

Indeed. She's absolutely beautiful. No arguing that.;)

And that's the problem with modern-day media: skewed perception.

If people are constantly told in magazines, on billboards, on TV, on the radio, online that only slim equates to attractive, people start believing it and are conditioned to want to look a certain way.

Granted, slim can be attractive but so to can curves and plus-size. Attractiveness is entirely subjective, but the power of the media make it more appealing for people to want to conform to their ideals.

That and being thin is marketed as successful and powerful.

Anything bigger and you're lazy, unhappy and a slob.

Size 0 - Why don't they call it what it really is, remove the woman, save money and use coat hangers, they're just as small. Can't stand the site of size 0 woman, poor things disappear when they turn side ways! I love a size 8 to 16 woman I can hold on to!

    Oh, definitely.

I'm doing work at the moment about gender stereotyping in advertising and some of the ads I found online and in magazines surround body image have been horrible.

It's actually disgusting, the amount of pressure put on both sexes to fit a certain image, to be considered attractive.

I've looked through literally hundreds of ads and the only time curves are ever looked at positively are in ads for mascara!

I say we should campaign to have the stereotypical idea of how a man and woman should be changed to that of Johnny Vegas and Dawn French.

Well, going from one unhealthy extreme to the other isn't necessarily the best way of handling things.

I think advertisers and fashion houses (etc) should aim to promote a larger range of people and body shapes in their campaigns and shows. There's not just one defintion of 'sexy' or 'attractive' and using only extremely slim models appeals to a very niche market.
So long as people are healthy and happy, there's no reason why they can't be a good model, or indeed, role model - regardless of their size!
