I know the answer is more than likely in the manual but since some of you have the manual in your heads I thought I'd ask here....
Is there any way I can set up the Garmin (405) to tell me the mile splits with out pressing the button at every mile? At the minute I'm just figuring it out on garmin connect player. Is there any way of getting it to tell me mile splits on old runs if I didn't have it set up to do so originally?

ETA.....apologies.... bloody hell I am a lazy cow. A quick google told me the answer to the first question (autolap) but I still wonder is there any way to see mile splits on old runs that weren't autolapped.

I don't think you can apply the mile splits to old runs in Garmin Connect, It sometimes won't even show me them in new runs. If you use SportsTracks though you can get that to aply splits to your previous workouts though.

Was running today and the 405 came off. It broke at the join where the strap meets the GPS band. Have contacted Garmin but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Its only 13 months old! Can i get it repaired in Ireland?

My strap came undone a couple of weeks as well, took a bit of fiddling but manage to get the pin back in eventually. It's the same as any other watch strap pins, just a lot more tricky to get at.

For some reason the strap just popped off again. Managed to get it back on, but part of the plastic that the pin goes through on one bit of the actual watch part seems to have broken off. It might be on it's last legs now as if that goes on the actual watch section it won't be fixable. :(

Just need to be nice to it from now on whilst I think up reasons to justify buying a new one.

Thats more or less what happened to my one. It completely broke from the GPS part of the strap. I managed to get in touch with Garmin, explain what happened and sent some photos to back to up and they have taken it back for a repair. It is just out of warranty (by 1 month) but in fairnest to them they said that they will fix it as a warranty repair for free!! The email address is product.support@garmin.com.:)

having some probs with battery life when I get down below 25% - basically at anything from the low twenties the watch will switch off as soon as I hit the start/stop button and then start up again - anyone else have this issue?

also I noticed today after my run that battery life was v low - got the usual beeps to tell me the battery was low but then it just died - right after it told me I had 15% left... is this normal?

as a result of these two issues I usually recharge when it gets down to 30ish but just wondering should I be sending this back? Its only 6 months old..

I usually recharge from 50%. I don't think think the battery meter is very accurate.

I'd usually have mine on recharging once it's down near the 50's as well and would be a rare occasion for me to let it go below 50.

The battery life on the 405 is only about 5 hours, it consistently dies between 5~6 hours go time.
This is probably the 5th time I've said this on a Garmin 405 thread so to clarify I love the watch :)
Great watch apart from that but utterly useless if you intend to be away from a charging station for more then 6 hours ie: away on a cycling trip for the weekend...

I get a fair bit more than that, usually 7-8 hours or so before it dies:confused: Although it has appeared to be getting closer to 7 as the years go by having started above 8..

The 310XT supposedly has up to 20 hours battery life.

I have a couple of rechargable batteries that I charge via PC USB, mains USB or also a solar panel, and then use to recharge phones, DS, mp3's and anything else I happen to have that comes with a USB charging cable. Works great to give you that extra bit of juice when your away from the mains electric for longer than usual. I don't see a mHA number for that battery which would give an indication of how much juice you'd get out of it efore draining it, but those devices will charge anything* that comes with a USB charging cable no problem. Should work fine for the 405, but don't know how many recharges you'd get out of it and I'm not sure I've even seen the mHA rating for the watches battery anyway.

    * There are some old Creative mp3 players which will only charge when they thing they are connected to a powered PC USB port because Creative didn't follow the official USB specification and wanted to sell more of their own brand of mains charger. There was a bodge to get around it though with shorting a couple of the pins in the USB cable.

Yes, it's based on the 305, which also has a similar battery life. That's what they squeeze into all that extra space - a bigger battery.

12V inverters are quite useful as well if you have the car with you. Aldi or Lidl were selling them ridiculously cheaply recently.

Hey Krusty (he-who-knows-all-things-garmin!!) any suggestions as to where I might source a HRM that is compatible with the 305? Need to replace and don't fancy paying €60+ for it.

when I left mine behind somewhere on the streets of Barcelona, I picked up a new one from amazon.co.uk. I went with the premium strap, which is €47 euro delivered, but you could go for the old style strap, which is €40 delivered.

The soft strap is a lot more comfortable, but the spikes in the first mile (5-8 mins) seem to be higher than the old style strap. Doesn't bother me unduly, but it annoys a lot of other people.

The 405 watches are years old (I've been running with mine since May 2008). Probably best you check out the Gear and Equipment sub-forum. Lots of answers there, including the difference between a 305 and 405.
