OMG I have just realised how much of a resource my local library is, I mean you can read book after book for an entire year for only €2, I have never got so much entertainment for so little money, who here regularly uses their local library and realises how much of a resource it is?

I don't like the attitude of my local library because they keep sending cards out asking for their books to be returned. We're just not compatible, but they'll come round to my way of thinking in the end.

sometimes I use it but tbh the standard of books can be restrictive

I LOVE my local library, in fact I am surprised they haven't banned me, the amount of books I always have out LOL! Got some OK DVD's in there too which can be handy. Mines €5 for the year not €2, but still amazing value, in fact my membership expires tomorrow

    So... no, not really.

I do, used to go more often when I had no internet but I don't go that often anymore. Although you can borrow DVDs, CDs and games from my library. Of course I've never borrowed CDs and ripped them onto my computer.

It doesn't cost anything in Fingal.

I'm sorry to hear you have to pay membership fees in some places. My library has always been free, I love it. You can borrow CDs, DVDs also. I often order the bestsellers e.g. I've just looked up Colum McCann's latest book, "Falling for a dancer", and it is available to borrow, though I might have to wait a couple of weeks. A pretty good service.

Though hearing the stories about the swimming pools, I hope the libraries don't go the same way, due to lack of funds. Especially now, during recessionary times, I think we need our libraries more than ever.

... I hope the libraries don't go the same way, due to lack of funds. .

They could increase the fee to €2.50 if there is a drop in footfall. Or they could use rates and taxes to pay for public services.

Your local library has access to every book in every public library in the country, you just have to ask for a book and they will get it for you.

I work at one of the top 100 libraries in the US. We have the latest books, DVDs, audiobooks, CDs, playaways (ipod type things), computers for internet/office stuff, free wi-fi. I love it there! There is NO LIMIT on the amount of items you can have checked out at one time. Overdue fines are $0.10c a day. If you like inside the city limits, then part of your property tax already pays for your card.

You've been ripped off if they charged you €2 to access their services.

Don't even need to leave the house to get books from mine, just download the ebooks for free from their website.

Yea libraries hate it when you take out books, keep it up and I'm sure you'll be banned.

    My local library is great.
I lost my card and there's a 12 euro fine on it, so there's no chance of me asking for another. I normally use my girlfriends' card now. The fool.
