Good girl is worse. Really pisses me off when someone says that to me for some reason.

My dad says it to me (e.g. "would you put on the kettle like a good girl") and it doesn't annoy me too much as he's my dad and still thinks I'm 12 at times so it's kinda cute, and it's just a turn of phrase in that context - but when customers do it (not elderly ones who are just being sweet) but those my own age or not much older, to be deliberately condescending and snide... oh the fumes!

I know! All they're short of doing is patting your bloody head while saying it

Has to be one of the most condescending statements I hear on a daily basis. I swear, people would say it as if I were a 5 year old in stead of 25.

I wouldn't look on the word lad as referring exclusively to children. I'm also 25 and would use the term "lads" all the time when talking about my group of friends.

On the other hand we mostly use the term "Good lad yourself" sarcastically when someone has done something stupid.

What this all comes down to is that nobody wants to be treated like a child. Personally, I don't mind it when it's a family member or old person, that's grand. What I don't like is being made feel like a child which goes beyond the "good lad/chap" comments. It's the "ah sure you're only still a baby", I got this comment off a person on my MSc course who's in his forties. Fair enough, I'm half his age (I'm 21) but there's no need to be condescending prick about it.

it's hard to thank people in this day and age.

I do feel for you customer facing people though, "the public" are idiots, in fact we're all idiots.

If i just say "thanks" it's a bit snippy
if I add something to the end: man, dude, bro, woman, lass, girl someone at some point will take exception.
If I go grave on the matter "I would like to personally thank you for your excellent service in dispensing my change" well, you just sound pompus.

so that's it, El_loco is going to grunt, mumble and gesture (rudely) from now on!!

    "here's your change"
    "Mnfhhhfhf!"

There's a scene in a James Bond actually (don't know which one but it's definitely a Roger Moore one - probably the most politically incorrect Bond :pac:) where he says to the scantily clad young woman he was just frolicking with, something like: "The men are talking now dear - run along and buy yourself an ice cream like a good girl" and slaps her on the arse... :D
