Newbie gardener - How do I start a veg/herb box?

Im keen to start a couple of boxes outside my house (cant use the yard itself as its a rented house and the landlords are growing new grass out back) and need to know where to start! Would love to grow a few fresh herbs in one, and some simple salad or veg in the other? Any easy ideas? Thanks! :)

All you need to do is buy some nice big pots, some compost and some seeds. You can plant the herbs in one pot and the salad in the other. Herbs and Salad are prob the best to start off with as they are easy to look after. Follow the instructions on the back of the packs.
