I suppose they are trying to make it look like we are in a better position than we really are.

Why spend money on badly needed schools when you can give it away to Greece?

You couldn't invent this stuff: we they are lending Greece €450 if it needs it while we they are up to our necks in debt.

Will we be giving it to them in 50's or will we they just give us the change from a €500 note? :P

In fairness though, it is ridiculous. Isn't Greece about the only country worse off than Ireland in the EU at the moment? IIRC, we were neck and neck there for a while. How the f.u.ck can loaning that sort of money be justified by any means?

We do €500m exports with them yearly so it's all relative.

Just reading through the articles, they're not actually lending it just yet. They've just told Greece they will if asked to.

ETA: You already said that but I read it wrong. Sorry. Leaving the post though for emphasis.

Apparently it's more important to impress the powers that be in the EU than look after our own people.

The collapse of the Greek economy, a Eurozone member, would cost us far more than €450million

This is actually a very good thing for us.

Firstly, by stabilising Greece, the EU is hoping to prevent the problems in Greece from spreading (the last thing this country could handle at the moment).
Secondly, in the event that this country does collapse (fortunately looking unlikely as our prospects improve), there would be an existing basis for which we could receive assistance from the EU.

The EU is loaning us all those billions for NAMA. A paltry 450mil for Greece in return is nothing.

Ireland isn't lending anything to anyone ...we're broke, just as broke as Greece in case you hadn't noticed.

What Ireland is doing is to re-divert money that it was given by the EU in the first place back into the new EU pot for Greece.

Also, I don't think that Ireland has any say in this matter whatsoever ..this was decided over our heads

Great stuff!!! Irish companies are going out of business everyday because they can't obtain credit from the banks, yet our piece of sh!t government offers €450m at the flip of a hat!!!

Anyhow ...what do you get for 450 million these days ...feck all really.

Anything we have been investing in bailing out lately has cost billions and will continue doing so.

450 million for some lovely Greek island sounds like a steal to me.

Crap like this makes me wonder are we really broke, we can find billions for banks and half a billion for greece but we cut social welfare and public sector wages.

That 450 million is a third of the savings gained from PS paycuts.

We didn't "find" half a billion under the couch and are going to give it to Greece ...we are going to get half a billion less from the EU ourselves.

And because the EU are nice people they are going to put a little bowtie with our name on it on that half billion so that we don't look entirely stupid (and broke) when all the ministers gather to hand over cheque in front of the press:D

Bit like the poor kid on the kiddies birthday party where the mommy of the birthday child gives them a wrapped present to hand over because they poor kid could just about afford the busfare to get there in the first place ...but no present.

its official ...... Anglo, NAMA ....its all a joke, the country still has money !

How else could we do this ???

I know the government didnt have a "budget" during the boom times - but someone needs to tell them they cant keep "using" public funds.

If everyone is pitchign in on this fund to help Greece, do you think we can just say "sorry lads, we're broke" and they'll be happy with that and make up he difference themselves?

We're giving the money twice?

They were just proto-spooning. Bumming didn't arrive till much later.
