If you're getting one in the US, take your laptop. You have to activate it in iTunes before you can us it AT ALL.

Thanks for that piece of info. I'm heading to the US in a few weeks and am planning on buying an iPad. I was wondering if I'd be able to use it at all as I won't have my Macbook to synch it with.

Apart from bringing my Macbook is there any other way of getting it working?

not my words but in a nutshell ..... This is the big news. These are the first keys that allow for the decrypting of the iPad ipsw files and allow us to look inside of them for exploits and codings.

I think it's safe to say that the keys provided will give root access .

internet cafe maybe if you can install iTunes, you will need iTunes and a PC to get going. iPad in hand and all I could do on the flight home was read a magazine article about it while the guy next to me happily played with his iPad.

    Frustrating doesn't even come close.

Thinking about it, speak to the apple genius in the apple store, they have plenty of macs with iTunes installed lying around.

They will be more than happy to activate it for you in the Apple store. Just ask whoever serves you.

    11) It still doesn't have flash. But that's nearly irrelevant as adobe CS5 will be able to generate native iPhone code for submission to the App Store. Expect to see a lot of familiar flash apps in iTunes
    real soon.

Hot off the press, looks like they are not even going to allow that. I don't understand the logic behind that really but there has to be some reason.

Graham, can you tell me how much the ABC app is? if it's free can you download it and see if you can stream their tv shows? i.e. do they have any IP restriction built into the app.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,642 Mod ✭✭✭✭Graham

It's free, and you can download it if you have a US iTunes account. Does appear to be IP restrictions though as it detects I'm out of the US and so won't allow me to play anything :-(

    damn, thanks for trying that.

also one quick other thing, with iBooks can you add your own books to iBooks? i.e. if i have a couple of pdf's i'd like to read can i place them in iBooks instead of having them emailed to myself like i'm doing now on my iPhone.

Unfortunately not, iBooks doesn't support PDFs.

You can add your own ePub documents.

Actually, he's since posted why he thinks this was done and it makes some sense.

Wow, really didn't see that coming. Quite surprised but I suppose I can see the logic behind John Grubers points.

Used the iPad during my commute home and back into work again this morning.

Managed to catch the entire OS 4.0 Keynote on the iPad, no problem. Reading the Irish Times, Independent and BBC this morning was an absolute pleasure.

RVN10, let us know how you get on.

Apple make a cover that's quite similar to the one for the Sony Reader with the added advantage that you can turn it into a kind of wedge shape, perfect for using on your lap on the couch.
