Just got mine earlier and am posting from it now!

Not much to say from it yet as I've only just finished setting it up but damn do I love this thing. The typing experience in landscape is fantastic!

Also just the sheer speed of it is great!

Very happy with it especially considering it was a gift :D

Specifically can you check www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer and see if any of the radio Listen Again shows will play. They work on a desktop but I get the "Content Not Available outside the UK" on the mobile version of the site.

Edit: Thank you for your quick response and much appreciated. Where are my manners?

Wow, that's a fairly specific request, one of the few advanced iPlayer features available overseas that's currently available only in flash.

Not through the iPlayer website as that's a flash/realaudio stream, there is a mobile version of the site but that doesn't contain all of the features of the iPlayer itself.

Don't rush out and buy an iPad yet if that's your killer mobile need but it looks like the BBC are fairly committed to bringing their content to multiple mobile platforms.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8519783.stm

They are apparently working on an iPhone App for radio, but it's currently only in Beta from the iPlayer labs.

This is the approach most seem to take and thankfully the user agents for each of the devices (phone/touch/pad) are different enough that it's unlikely an iPad would be matched as a mobile device. That said all three devices identify themselves as Mobile Safari so if a site is matching on Mobile Safari then the iPad would be redirected to a mobile version.

Haven't been directed to a single mobile site on it yet, a web site would need to go out of it's way to redirect an iPad user to a mobile version of their site and they'd have to be fairly misguided to do that given the resolution of the iPad.

That's a big question for anyone considering acquiring an iPhone/iTouch/iPad.

In short, most websites will work as long as they are not written entirely (or partly) in flash.

    websites written entirely in flash
    No, they just won't work.

For websites written partly in flash
Just the flash parts won't work.

If you don't know how to check if a website uses flash post a URL here and I'll either try and show you how to check or I'll try and check and report back.

    Flash is most popular for:

    Animated advertising
    Embedded video
    Browser based games

If you have a specific website you can't live without, don't buy an iPhone/iTouch/iPad unless you are sure it falls into one of these categories:

    No Flash (safe for iPhone/iTouch/iPad)
Low Flash (safe for iPhone/iTouch/iPad but you won't see flash adverts)
Hi Flash (not safe for iPhone/iTouch/iPad without major loss of functionality)
App Safe (there's an iPhone/iTouch/iPad App which recreates the website with no loss of functionality)
App Safe$ (you can buy an iPhone/iTouch/iPad App which recreates the website with no loss of functionality)

Not sure if your can't live without website works on the iPad/iPhone/iTouch?

    There's a thread for that:

I guess the problem I have with the "review" that started all this is the blinkered view the OP has about the iPad, the whole "let's talk about all the good things about the iPad but please don't dwell on Flash or DRM". Simply dismissing Flash as not important is just inviting people to correct you.

I agree that it's fairly strange to entitle a thread as a review and then have a mini-freak attack when people try to discuss the negatives of the device, telling people to get off your thread and such.

Especially when it seems the OP will happily discuss the pros of alternatives:

OP, is there anything you've found bad about the iPad to this point?

Keane2097, the reason I didn't particularly want to discuss flash is the Ipad doesn't support it, so as long as people know that up front I don't see that it's a problem. Particularly as its not something thats going to change.

I was worried the thread would look something like this:

    comment 1
    But it doesn't support flash
    comment 2
    But it doesn't support flash
    comment 3
    But it doesn't support flash
    comment 4
    But it doesn't support flash

Luckily I needn't have worried.

No, it doesn't support flash. If flash is essential to you, this is not the device for you.

Negatives so far, I'm sure there will be more after more extensive use:
It's more substantial than you would anticipate.
The screen is a fingerprint magnet, it really should have come with a cloth. I'm in the office with it now after my colleagues have given it a thorough mauling.
Some of the iPhone games run almost twice as fact on the iPad. Makes for some frenzied gaming.

Point taken, but it's a non-issue as far as I am concerned that the device doesn't support Flash. It's nothing new, business as usual, as you were, etc.

So, let's not derail the thread with further discussion of Flash as it is not iPad specific, it is a common attribute of all Apple Media Devices.

The typing experience in landscape is fantastic!

Would you type a long document, ie a college essay, on it?

Can you touch type and or build up fast typing speeds?

    Is it ergonomic?

Havent typed much on it but have had no problems so far. Not sure I'd want to use an on screen keyboard for enormous documents. You can get the Keyboard dock, or use a bluetooth keyboard with it. Will post about this again when I've done more typing on it.

As someone who'd a muppety moment with US/Ire plugs, converters & voltages, I thought I'd ask. I gather it needs 10w to charge, so would the included unit work with just a regular UK/Ire plug slotted in (like this fella) or are there other differences?

Very much want one myself but how to share one with the other half without profiles or similar in Safari is a bit of a bummer.

International travel kit contains the UK plug and can be slotted onto the iPad power adapter in place of the US one. I'll try and post a pic later. I think thats the part in your photo from the travel kit.

For all the FLASH worriers ...From Page 10 .

"More and more video providers are switching to HTML5 video on the Web, meaning that the ability to watch live broadcasts via Mobile Safari on the iPad is just around the corner. "

Rats, have that bit from the iPhone charger, so thought I'd save myself that kit & spend it on an accessory instead. It has "Max 2.5A 250V-50HZ" on it - is that different to what's on your UK plug?

Tries it last night, got the app ok with a US account but was blocked when trying to play.

They must be doing IP geotagging.

I read that this morning. It is very thoughtful. I don't agree with all of it but at least they acknowledge that they can't make up their collective mind about what it all means.

iPhone versions of most apps work really well on the iPad, either at normal or X2 size.

Some iPhone games run much quicker on the ipad though.

The BBC Worldwide already have an iPad app, it's very slick.
