I'm just after having a quick stroll down to Tesco to buy a cheap t-shirt - turns out I forgot my wallet, but whatever.

So there I stand in the middle of the shop, with just over a quid's worth of change. I'm not going to walk out of the shop empty-handed like a loony, so I go to the confectionery section, my brother wanted some sweets so I got them him, and a Freddo and a small pack of Haribo for myself.

Get to the self-serve checkout (why do the always scream 'Unexpected Item in the bagging area'? It makes my blood boil, and the 'checkout assistant' - probably the least apt name in the world considering their obvious hatred of assisting anyone - always looks at me like I'm a thief.

Anyway, it turns out this Freddo was.. wait for it.... 17p. Seventeen fucking pence! It's not that long ago it was just 10pence - and a normal chocolate bar (previously around 30p) is now upwards of 50p.

I don't understand banks amazingly well, but if they're to blame for the rise in the price of a Freddo... I'm going to have to kill every last banker on the planet.

The Haribo were nice though.
Anyone else noticed any other small products 'sneaking up' in price?

Reminds me of the days of the punt. If you had a pound you were sorted for at least a bag of crisps, bar of chocolate and some sweets. Plus the coins were massive not like the shíte we have today!

When i was young,10p used to get you a ten penny bag of sweets that would last you..well a whole of two minutes the way i ate sweets.

Lucky to get a bar for less than around a euro at this stage.

Think I remember bars costing 20p back in the day.

Inflation, what a load of crap.
They are just purposely ripping us off, because they can.

penny sweets were the shiz, and toffee logs for 2p. and a packet of monster munch cost 12p. think they're about 60c now.
anyway, when i started working in england, there was a fair bit of talk about bringing in the euro there, and one of the girls i worked with said that there was no way she was paying 40c for the sun, that 30p was the most she could afford at the time. bless her cotton socks.

Everytime I go to the UK, I don't realise when I'm being ripped off because it 'seems' to be less.

For example, bars of chocolate are 50p (approx) in the UK. Here, you would commonly pay 80-90c for a bar of chocolate (I kid you not - it's a rip off).

Maybe the lower VAT rate has something to do it, but in reality it's just because the shops in Ireland are fcuking greedy, still thinking they are living in the days where people had a lot of money to spend on luxury/non-essential items.

You would think that with the recession things would be getting cheaper, not more expensive.

Suppose they see it that now people want to eat more chocolate (cheap comfort food,recession), that they might as well charge higher prices.
And of course, they make the bars smaller. That way you pay more for smaller bars and they make more money...

I remember when there were a rake load of bars etc that cost 10p and 5p.
Mint and Cola Woppa bar, Wham bars, Macaroon bars.
Big chunky Refresher sweets for 3p.

I need a time machine, stat.

Edit: I also need some punt currency.

The cocoa price is about $US3276/tonne, after hitting a nominal 30-year high in December on the weak US dollar, strong demand and concerns about supplies in the Ivory Coast.

The price of cocoa has doubled from its average price of around $1600 / tonne. That is why there has been a sudden increase in chocolate prices. For easter , easter eggs did not increase in price because all the chocolate companies SIGNIFICATLY reduced the amount of chocolate in their eggs. Cadburys giant milk egg fell from almost 1000g of chocolate to 740g.

Many bars of chocolate have also lost weight. If not for this the price of chocolate bars would be even higher

Yeah, now you get these bags of sweets for like €3, that are basically the equivalent to bags which would have been previously on sale for 50p.

Back in the day when they WERE actual tasty crisps, not the piss-poor quality ones we get today! They've ended up changing how they make them thus making them taste like crap.
