When I was young and foolish, well... anyway, when I was younger I used to enjoy wasting spending hours of my time banging my head off the wall trying to figure out which bit of the Windows OS/PC was causing the latest "issue". I built, rebuilt and upgraded dozens of the damn things for myself and others.
Then, just over four years ago I bought one of the first Intel iMacs, which I'm looking at right now. I've updated the OS from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard without having to change anything except the keyboard (on which my daughter spilled some sort of liquid). It's running tight on space in the Hard Drive so that might be a problem but, on balance, I think I made the right decision.

every computer is a bloody pc, it's a personal computer. it's yours, it computes things, it's a PC.

    I'm a PC.

Couldn't recommend them more. Aside from being reliable, beautiful devices, they cater to consumers far better then Windows could ever aspire to. Even the best bits of Win7 (which is their best in years) are "borrowed" from OS X.

The ease of use, lack of problems and design philosophy of applications are just unreal. Well worth it.

If budget is an issue I would recommend getting a cheap PC, wiping the hard drive and installing Ubuntu.

Unless you need it for something specialised I don't think it makes much of a difference, and macs tend to be a lot more expensive

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Windows everytime. Macs are more fashion accessories than anything else. They're for people whose most important criteria when buying a PC is the shape and colour of it. And whats with paying the price of a small car for a computer and then not being able to improve it in anyway yourself without getting the manufacturer involved!
Komplett parts + screwdriver + copy of Windows 7 = The way to go.

Mac. I've been using them since the 1980s. It was problematic back in the 90s when there was really no compatible software for them, but in the last decade things have definitely improved. I've used Windows at most of my workplaces, and I just find that system slow and not very user friendly.

I use Mac, at the start it was hard to get used to, but after a month or two of use, I was flying with it.

Will be upgrading to a MacBook Pro - hopefully when i get some mula!

linux = great, not as user friendly for new people.
windows = nice for games etc
mac = let's make a flashy unix and charge a grand more

Only problem with macs is the retarded price, because they know they can get away with it.
Look at the ipad, what a piece of ****. Will still make a mint. Well played to them on marketing, their best attribute.

OK, as a person who's used Mac's & Windoze (Sorry windows) for over 20 years I can tell you that Microsoft has been chasing the Mac since day one.

Never have they released an operating system that was better than the current (at the time) Mac OS.

If you don't know a lot about computers & can afford a new iMac, I recommend you do that.

If you have friends who like fixing PC's & re-installing Windows, all the drivers etc over & over... I recommend you get an iMac

If you're stuck for a few quid & don't feel like spending much, I recommend looking for a 2nd hand Intel iMac... or

Pick up a cheap computer (generically known as PC's) & have a friend install Ubuntu on it. It's an amazing operating system with plenty of pre-installed software. It works like a dream, never crashes (Not for me anyway) has Open Office, Firefox (for web browsing), Evolution mail (for email... like outlook but works), it has more free software available than you can count hairs on your head (assuming you're not bald)

All in all it's just so good & it looks great too. It runs fast & doesn't slow down over time like Windoze. You'll have more viruses & trojans than you can possibly imagine after your first week with Windoze unless you purchase about 3-4 different programs that will strangle your performance & lead to you pulling your hair out. You'll then be bald :D

I wouldn't recommend it over the Mac for the reason that you stated "not knowing much about computers"

Mac all the way. Plenty of support & forums to help. Can run windoze if you really desperately want to revert to an inferior operating system. In fact you can install Windoze on a partition of your drive & choose to boot up with Mac OS or Windoze. The Mac actually runs windoze better than most PC's you can buy over the counter!!!

Once you go Mac, you'll never go back. Don't listen to all the haters who swear by their PC's & Windows 7. Macs are not over priced if you're looking for longevity. They hold their value like no PC can.

Can't wait for the barrage from all the Windoze nut huggers now!!!! :D

Mac - It works out of the box

PC - Er... yeah... I just need to connect up 4 leads...

    Linux - 0100111001011000101001

I'm going to call bullshít on this part of your post...

I got a new PC a around Nov 08. Didn't install any a/v on it untill around... Nov 09.

I had been using it for alot of web browsing... online gaming and downloading through out that period...

hmmm guess what... no virus infections. Just up to 5 months later... still no infections...

Don't do stupid shít online and you won't have a problem with it... Told my Dad that when he installed Norton AV. He had more problems with Norton then anything else.

Windows for me especially with widows 7 being excellent. Apple stuff is just that bit too much work when it comes to compatibility with other people and with work. Also price.

I was buying a thin and light laptop before xmas and looked at the macbook air. It looks good but it has one usb slot and no LAN, no dvi or hdmi out and costs a fortune. Bought a lenovo u350 instead its about the same weight, a little thicker, much more sturdy, much bigger hard drive and has all the ports you would have on a big laptop and I have found its performance excellent. It looks good too.

Well played to them on marketing[the iPad], their best attribute.

Apple spent less on Marketing the iPad before it's release than BallyLittle spent on their village fete. Total marketing outlay was close to zero. They paid to invite people to the announcement ( the cost of a few email), book the venue, and put up some banners. Until that day - nothing.

The iPod took off because Window's users wanted it, not because of the Marketing. Apple's marketing was slim.

Lol, the quote above you was from someone who actually knows computers. A hell of a lot of what you like in Windows is copied from the original Mac, the first commercial OS to do mouse and Window integration.

People who know computers tend to like Unix.

+1. Actually one advantage of a mac is you can run all of the above on the same machine. Which can be handy.

I've used all of the above. Each defo have their advantages. Linux is the most adaptable and tweakable to personal prefrence. Macs the least, Windows in the middle. Ease of use for newbies would go the other direction.

I find the various Windows Ive tried the least satisfactory in one way, they tend to interrupt you more. Lots more bubbles and warnings popping up. more stopping and starting. That and trackpad control isnt as slick as on macs or linux in my experience. If I use Windows for any length of time I get used to it, but switching to Mac or Linux you do notice the diff.

I've always had windows pcs at home and at work, and I have never had any problems with them.

I loved macs in college though, because you had all the pc heads who were afraid of using macs and would queue for ages to get a pc in the pc room, when there was a half-empty mac-room next door...

Partially agree. Where Apple have the advantage is their skill at knowing what people actually want and use and wrapping it in a nice package. There were far better MP3 players out there. With more features etc. The ipod won. Why? Because what most people want is play, rewind, fast forward and ease of use and a one stop shop. They've done it again with phones. All smart phones with the exception of blackberries, look like iphones. They made it simple, in a cool design with some innovation and have the app store.

Same goes for Os's too. IMHO the problem, if it is one with computing and technology stuff is the people who design them. Highly intelligent geeks and nerds who thrive on complexity and a certain way of thinking. Thank god or we would be still writing letters to each other. The problem is often they're too linear. Apple are very clever at spotting the wood for the trees. Its good they and others like them are around. If they werent then I do believe the windows of today would not exist. It was designed by engineers for engineers and the "human" element is often missing and thats with Apples OS in the picture.

Well technically if you look at compatibilty Macs "win" there as you can run all the oses on the same machine. Its a personal thing too. I find Win 7 dog slow out of the box and knowing windows itll get slower and slower and slower over time(WTF is that about?).
    Also price.
Agreed, though they do aim at a different market.

Yea they defo need a thin, light and cheap mac in the lineup. The air is an overpriced, over delicate POS. I suspect they'll not go that route though. They'll look to the iPad to hit that market. The current one is a testing the waters thing I reckon. Actually I think the air was too. Just to see how many would buy a PC without all the usual bits, like CD drive etc.

I had a Sony Laptop but am now seriously considering getting a Mac after dealing with two companies customer service this week:

Sony: A laptop I bought from the Sony Centre was defective. I brought it to a computer repair guy 3 times. He checked for errors, reformatted the hard drive twice, and concluded that the problem was with the laptop itself. I return it to Sony for a refund, which I am legally entitled to, and they claim that all manufacters defects must be found within 2 weeks or they won't refund. Even after I phone the consumer affairs hotline who tells them that that's illegal, they refuse to give me a refund. I'm still trying to sort this one out, and it's looking like I might have to go to the small claims court.

    Apple:
My out of warrenty iPhone has a piece of lint stuck in the headphone jack. I book a repair at the Apple store. Guy there can't get it out. He agrees to replace the phone free of charge, even though it's out of warranty.

There's nothing I hate more than people who use Windoze or M$, its completely juvenile and used by the worst posters on Macrumors etc.

As OSs go I'd rate Windows 7 higher than snow leopard, it really is an excellent operating system. On the hardware side I think the industrial design on current range of Macs is superb. Little things bug me though, such as the lack of hdmi (rumour suggests that'll be addressed in the next rev.) and the omission of Blu-ray given the price. You will get better bang for your buck with a Windows machine although it won't hold it's value like a Mac will. Other things that have pissed me off is being forced into upgrading the OS e.g. I remember having to upgrade to Tiger from Panther because the iPod I bought would only work with the latest OS despite the same iPod working happily with 3 generations of Windows. Also Apple can be slow enough to acknowledge and support issues with their products (I've been burned by the G4 logic board failures). As for the arguement about Malware etc. on windows if you use a bit of cop on and stay away from dodgy sites you'll be fine.

They only valid reason for owning a mac is so that you can sing this song.

I been windows since the beginning yo, me an windows go way back, back to the 3.11 ya'll, windows till I die. *Gangsta nerd signs*
