jeasus this just gets better, what is the point in issue/expiry dates if that's the case,
I think I'm right with that TBH. They'll accept an emergency passport but I think that's only within the EU though. Best bet would be Citizens Info. TBH.

Travelled on a very new passport two years ago, hit 4 different countries within two months of having it, not an issue afaik.

Supposedly it's possible to travel around Europe without a passport, I don't think it's possible but there are people that I've talked to that are convinced you can travel to countries like the UK on a good ID card.

If that were possible you could cancel the big trip and stay within Europe.

I can confirm that. About 5 years ago my dad was allowed travel to england on his drivers license, both on plane and ferry. Done the same thing the following year.

Pay someone who is broke to queue for you from midnight the night before.

Then get them to text you when they are close to the main door.

    Swap places.

    Bobs your auntie.

I know someone also who got sorted by queuing very early.

Bring sambos, a flask and After Hours if you have a decent mobile that allows m.Boards surfing.

Doesn't your "new" passport have to be 1 or 3 months old before you can use it anyway?

Nope..absolutely not...its valid from the moment you have it in your hot little hand.

Well there you go, the challenge is to see how far you can get without a passport.

    Validity of Irish passports

Irish citizens travelling to destinations outside the EU are subject to the specific passport controls and requirements of those countries. This means, for example, when travelling outside the EU, your passport may need to be valid for a certain period. The arrangements vary from one country to another so contact the embassy of the relevant country before you travel for the most up-to-date information on these requirements. We cannot advise on the requirements of any particular country - you should contact the embassy directly.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit silly to be waiting until the last minute to renew your passport? I know it sounds a bit heartless, but why would you put it off?

edit: and just checking there, some places (including areas of Asia) require you to have a 6 month old passport. Sorry OP, but I think you're f*cked. But as said above, if you can't go, plan for next year and you'll save enough money for a kickass time.

His passport doesn't run out until July.

To be fair, under normal circumstances it would have been done and dusted well in time.

I was serious about the chaining by the way, someone did that and left after getting written confirmation he'd get his passport by Friday. Twas on the news.

Haven't you always needed 6 months left on it to travel?

I don't think you can do that now. On yesterday's Afternoon Show on RTE their Consumer Expert was talking about the passport situation and said that Ryanair have been asked if they would accept driving licences in an emergency and they said no, so I really wouldn't chance it.

She did say that if you had an English parent, you could apply for a UK passport from the British Embassy in Dublin and they turn them around in 10 days. I can confirm this because I've just renewed my own and it came back in 8 working days.

Other than that, I guess you'll just have to join the thousands queuing outside the Passport Office and hope for the best.

    Good luck :)

According to the news, the Cork Passport Office is not striking as badly as the Dublin office...

I dont think your passport needs to a couple of months old to use it for SE Asia, I did it bout 2 year ago on a brand spanking passport.

Get yourself down the passport offfice at the crack of dawn... as previously said, bring flask, sambos and maybe a Molotov cocktail incase things dont go your way!

If there is an embassy or consulate in Bangkok, and there wasn't ten years ago when I was last over there, contact them now and explain your situation. Given the time zone and presuming they aren't on a go slow you'll probably get a reponse quicker than from Molesworth St.

It could be company policy more than anything, they could be somehow liable and less willing to accept the validity of an ID they don't know intimately.
So while it may be borderline legal to travel without a passport the company may not be willing to accept anything other than a valid passport. Or it could be a pie in the sky if the EU was perfect thing. I'm guessing though maybe the ID thing never really panned out.

My advice would be to contact a local FG councillor or TD and tell him your situation. Explain to him that you'd appreciate anything he/she could do for you and emphasise that you won't forget them when it comes to election time.

People give out about local politics, but this is a situation where it works out for the ordinary Joe Soap. If he can't do anything, take the refund. You have no hope of getting your passport renewed in time through conventional methods.

OP, did you learn to finger paint in school?

If so, dirty protest in the passport office. Smear it in good and do your own recreation of cave drawings.

That's disgusting! Sticking your fingers in your own shyte is totally unnecessary just drag yourself across the floor like a dog with an itchy hole.

I'm pretty sure that just refers to having 6 months left on it when going to certain destinations like in the OP rather than the passport being a certain "age". That quote from CIB is badly worded.

Catch the cheapest flight you can to somewhere in europe where we have an embassy, go into the embassy and tell them you lost your passport and need a new one to get home, they'll have to sort you out an emergency one. Heard this on the radio this morning!

I live in Thailand .Ireland only has a Consulate in Bangkok .To renew my passport in Thailand the old one had to be sent back to Ireland by diplomatic post .( that was a year ago )

PS, Its true that your passport must have at least 6 months life left on entry to Thailand and most other Countries in the region .
