Bought farm, how to qualify for entitlements on land?

Hi folks,

Quick question about entitlements - I'm completely new to all of this, so am probably asking the obvious:

I've just bought 19 acres and an old house down West. I know that there are 7.42 entitlements attached to the land.

They are standard entitlements based on 'forage hectares'.

The previous owners are dead about two years, but I'm fairly certain they claimed the entitlements at least up to 2005.

Someone mentioned to me about reactivating their old herd number in order to claim these entitlements. I have not previously farmed and do not have a herd number.

So, in order to qualify for/claim these entitlements, what do I do? Who do I even contact to ask? Dept. Agriculture, Teagasc?

Also, it may be relevant, a local has offered to rent the land off me for the next year. Is it still possible to qualify for entitlements if you are renting out your land to someone? (He'll be running horses on the land, by-the-way)

you need to be farming.

If you are in the West, you may have what is called 'disadvantaged' land, which means that if you are a farmer, with a certain minimum no of stock - you may be entitled to a 'disadvantaged' grant.

You should contact an agri consultant to check.

Were the entitlements mentioned in the deed of transfer for the land? If they are then you just need to get your own herd number and fill out o transfer of entitlements form. If they are not then you dont have them.

Sorry to resurrect old thread - but thanks for the advice.

I'm a bit more clued in to this now and what suits my circumstances. Will be renting out the land for 11 months (never thought my land would be suitable to for horses, but in the space of two hours last Sunday I got six offers from different people all to put horses on my land) and will hopefully get to use the land myself for farming purposes next year.

horses will destroy ur land...
try to get a mix on it--cattle+horses...or sheep+horses!
we keep the cattle with the horses..compliment each other
if horses left on ground alone--they leave it patchy!

Hello all,
this may be a bit harsh, for the OP, But why cant you earn money of the land by doing something productive with it instead of just trying to milk the grants? This is exactly the type of attitude here that has ruined farming in this country. supported of course by the clowns in the government. We as country no longer produce anything and hence look at the state we are in.
